My grandmother's twin brother was the true black sheep of the family and run out of the S.F. Bay area by the sheriff for brawling and questionable cohorts. (It was that or jail, and being a civilized society they gave him the option of leaving). Mom found his commitment papers when dusting the top of the house's secretary desk one day. The story she was told was that he moved to the country (San Joaquin Valley) and that his wife and child died in a fire and he went crazy, ergo his institutionalization. Search of records, though, revealed he was never married nor had any spawn and that he died in the Napa State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. We'll probably never learn the true story behind "Uncle Elwood." However, he fits the bill for several of the Allegheny internment reasons. Ahhhh.... Those were the days.
