The Old Folks Home

Quote: It is hard to tell which ones are laying which egg unless you trap nest. I have not done that. I did try to keep count of eggs vs hens and average them out that way.
We have 15 hens left out of the 30+ we had before the dogs got their share. Out of the 15 we have left about half of them are the first hens we raised so their egg laying had already slowed down a lot.
I did order these young chicks to take up for the ones we lost and the older hens we have. As our egg customer list had grown a bit and we did not have enough eggs to meet the demand. And my DH got to fussing at me for fixing us eggs on the weekends! I told him I was going to have some eggs since I did all the raising, and that We come first! lol

I have been divorced 3 times. I still think marriage should last forever! But I tell my kids to fix it what ever it is even if they have to buy some punching gloves to have an all out brawl! lol Or a bottle of wine and a date night on the beach! Anywho "DIVORCE" should be the very last resort!

I agree on the pig smell, that's about the worst animal produced smell there is. Wouldn't want to live down wind from a broiler farm either...

And as much as I like dogs, I can't stand them barking for no reason at all. Luckily, most of our dogs stay quiet unless there's someone at the door.

Not looking like much of a winter here, so people are coming up with alternative methods to spread Christmas spirit.

Agreed. When all hope dies, it's time. Figure out what you added to the equation and vow to do better next time.

Latestarter, never say "Never!" as you never know.... You may meet a beautiful lady who is smart, competent, adoring, self-sufficient and who inspires you to be a better man. Could you really pass her up?

I love the snow man V and the tumbleweed man!

I did find one "wanting to die" rose comb dark brown leghorn pullet last night. We brought her in, hand fed her warm sugar water and peanut butter, let her sleep in the house over night. Odd. She has some very mild sign of leg mites, but no other parasites, no congestion, no prolapse, no anything. Her crop was completely empty.

No improvement this morning.

Anyway, we will kill her and necropsy her in about an hour since she did not improve at all. I was thinking that perhaps she had been bullied off of the feeder, and with the cold and darkness that is a fast death.

I prefer knowing why my chickens die.

We did check EVERY other chicken last night, and they all had nicely full crops.
