My son, his wife and 4 grand kids just left to return back to their home in Las Vegas. Was great to have them here for the short time they were. Son may get the chance to come back with kids this coming summer while mom is away at school for special qualifications and professional advancement. Now that I have animals, it's almost impossible for me to do road trip visits to my kids anymore. That kinda sucks. Oh well... It's a new year. Lets see what happens with it!

I'm sorry to hear about the chicken losses. I've been looking into electric fencing. Parmak seems to be one of the more preferred brands. It's an option.

My oldest had some surgery done yesterday, so she is here with me for a couple days, so I can care for her, and help her recuperate. Her husband loaded up all the kids, and they all went to his mother's, until Sunday night.

I'm intending to get back on the horse - in some senses, literally. I want to get all of my minis driveable; I need to do something about Latte and Sunny, too. There are a lot of building projects that I have started but haven't finished (like putting a new roof on the rabbitry) that I would love to be able to finally tick off of the "Bunny-do" list. Critter is thinking about doing Poinsettias again next year (he's been disappointed with the ones he's gotten from a local grower) - who knows, if the fuel prices hold, we might actually break even on them for once! But there may be other growing projects taking root in the greenhouse; we'll ahve to see . . . .

My oldest had some surgery done yesterday, so she is here with me for a couple days, so I can care for her, and help her recuperate. Her husband loaded up all the kids, and they all went to his mother's, until Sunday night.

I'm getting so many eggs now and they're not all laying yet. Wife made a quiche and sold a dozen at work.
I decided to go to the sushi restaurant up the road to see if I could sell some there.
Funny thing is, no one that works there is Japanese, they're all Chinese.

Chinese people make Chinese food.
Chinese people make Japanese food.
We have a local restaurant where Chinese people make both. VERY convenient! And the food is good too.

My favorite Sushi place is run by a Thai family. Both Thai and Japanese food are excellent. Mike the owner is the Sushi chef. He trained in Los Angeles with a big Japanese sushi chef.

My plans for the New Year?? I try not to, there have been too many times Ihave failed on resolutions or just got side tracked.

But my hope is to get my Chicken coop started. Maybe not for chickens till I move up there but My horse has been home alone too long.
By building the coop I can provide secure housing for some goat. we will see. I want Nigerian Wethers. The whole corral will have to be Goat proofed to keep them in though. its about 75 x 100.

So I will start with Horse anti climb to be run on the outside of the corral. to keep the goats in and dogs out. So I need about three hundred feet of $$ wire.

and to run hot wire dog nose height... Two lines about two inches apart. Positive and negative. Ground only works part of the year here.

Oh and enclose the hay storage area. as well as make the side wall and gate solid walls instead of pipe or wire. Wind protection

Missouri, like most states, allows killing dogs that attack livestock.
I think MO's law is very strong. If a dog 'worries' livestock, you can track that dog across the state and kill it wherever you find it except confined on its owner's property.

I actually had to inform animal control of the substance of that law.

I was wondering, what are some ya'lls plan s for the new year? I'm gonna get back to working here on the farm....I've neglected it now for over three years . No more of that!

Pretty much the same here. My place used to be a showplace. Then came travel for work and then chickens. I haven't been able to catch up yet.

One plan is to start a gardening/animal husbandry apprenticeship so I can get help.

I'm with you. The only problem I have raising chickens is that international travel is almost impossible.
I'm a co-organizer of a chicken group with over 700 members and we started a chicken sitting service but my setup isn't merely a coop with 4 chickens so I've been very reluctant to burden anyone with 8+ flocks for more than a day or two.

I think electric would solve some problems here but my perimeter is so convoluted I haven't been able to figure it out yet. I could move it inward but then I would lose some valuable forage space.
