Yep she will be 100 in July

Longevity runs in grandmas family. About six years ago she got a phone call from her nephew. I had no idea she had a nephew but found out he was the son of her oldest brother. Oldest brother was in WWI when she was born.

I asked how old the nephew was.... she said... 90....

My dad decided when he was 65 he was going to die like his father. Actually his dad had died at 45 from heart attack. My dad lived to 90, and caused chaos in the nursing home the last couple years of his life. My dad died of pneumonia - he never had heart issues.

Too much pain.... I wanted to read, but spouse stole the fast internet, so I am now at snail speed, it takes about five minutes to load a new page on BYC.

We got to have the windows open for hours today, blasted wood stove didn't love us. Gotta love telling the boys, "bend over farther, so your head is out of the smoke cloud. "

Luckily it is warm... Circling around the freezing point... Royal horrid place to hover since that equals ice.

I wanted to go to bed earlier... But I need to babysit the fire, get it happy bfore I go to bed, maybe another 30 minutes.

I mentioned that they should call their extension agent, for free, and figure out how good their land was, since land varies widely, and as an example of the variability of land quality, my sister's place averags out to 22 acres for one cow, and she actually has water and some decent rain.

Someone responded with "my family always figures on 5 acres to a cow"!!!!!!

Say WHAT???? -insert curse word- i do not CARE what your family says, it doesn't change the fact that you need to figure out what kind of land you are dealing with!!!! I actually just responded with:

The number of acres needed is determined mostly by the quality of the soil, the amount of average moisture, and the quality and quantity of the plants growing on the property as well as the size and kind of animal.

But the crazy stupidity! So... If I wish for 100 degree weather I will get 100 degree weather???? If I want lush pastures, I will get them??????

I am always ticked, that I ended up with sucky land.... Not that 22 acres per cow is that bad... Lots of Texas is 44 acres for one cow... But
if I am gonna have 22 acres for a single cow... I want to have 20,000 acres or something... Maybe if I want it real hard, it will come true.

Al, no wind? I usually burn some paper higher up in the chimney to get it to heat up and make a draft. And in some fireplaces I'll actually build a mini fire higher up at first to get a nice suction going.

Idiot child tried to start the fire with too much paper, and not directly under the flue which equals a smoke fest which takes some tme and smoke to recover from.

Dunno why they can't all make a fantastic fire... They get LOADS of practice.

Oh and yeah... No wind today, nice change, we have been having gale force winds this past week, for several days. I would say "same old, same old" but it managed to blow 8 or so composite shingles off of one of the houses that I take care of. Sheesh.

Roofer said it would cost a couple hundred just to crawl up there, look around, and hammer a bit. He doesn't like crawling up two storries high on a steep roof with ice to sink his ladder in. Don't blame him.... He is a good guy, and there is no bleebing way I am going to crawl up there to see where the shingles came from.... So pay I will!

Al, here 1 acre per cow is all that is necessary. The land must really be poor to require 5 acres per cow.
