The Old Folks Home

Welcome Charleschickens

I did manage to duck out of most of the photos. I looked through ALL of the photos on that page, and managed to see myself, I think only 4 times.

However, yes, the big group shot on the top of the photo page... I am in there, but not clearly thank goodness. Most of my boys are nice and clear and up front in that photo though. The only three wearing plaid are all my boys. The only boy wearing a wide bright cowboy type stripe shirt and holding a black hat is also mine. Boy #4 is in a light blue shirt and khaki pants, to the right of the two in blue and white plaid.

There you go, the 5 boys, and spouse and I are not next to any of them.

So go play "where is Waldo" as long as you like, but if you truly know which one is me, please don't tell.
What a beautiful church.

AL are you a tall Texan?

I think I found the spouse. And the kids were easy to spot wit the description. But what really caught my attention was the beautiful cladding of the church, I really like that. Reminds me of the houses built in the archipelago here, traditionally painted with red ochre paint.

Well, the heat wave just got worse. About 35 F right now, and it's raining. There's going to be a lot of ice soon. I hope people don't get hurt, it's been a while since we've last had this kind of weather.
We hit 50F yesterday but won't get above 35 for a couple days and then 60 by Saturday. Very unusual.

It's amazing how architecture changes as we move into extremely cold climates. On a drive across the country, I was struck when I drove into the Tetons of Wyoming by the fact that almost every building was a log cabin. Apparently that's the only type of building material that is insulative enough.

My new gardening/beekeeping/chicken/etc. apprentice is starting today. I hope she won't be too discouraged about all the work that needs to be done.

CC, log cabins are pretty common up in the north here too, but I think the main factor is that everything is further away the farther north you go, so being able to build a structure that has decent insulating properties with a material that can be sourced on site has probably aided in the success of the design. Plus, they look pretty good. But you can make thinner, more insulating buildings with modern materials too. Often that isn't necessary though, and log cabins have the added benefit of not requiring framing, as the structure is self supporting. So pretty easy build. Here they sell pre-fab log cabin kits, and it's basically like building a lego house. Getting the frame together for a 25 square meter cabin took us 2 days out at the cottage. Of course, you still need to make a roof and put in floors like on a normal house, but the walls came up super quickly.

They sell log homes here, too - there's one down the street from us. When we bought this place, Critter and I considered buying/building a log home, but then we had a young 'un on the way and we didn't have the time (and even Critter knew there are limits to what a pregnant woman can do).

An absolutely gorgeous January thaw day here. I was able to get all the poop boards cleaned off!!! I wanted to clean the coop floor out but that is still frozen, requiring too much effort to remove.

Hope y'all are having a great day.
