The Old Folks Home

I have been clearly too long in "hick-ville"

I was out visiting this afternoon...

And I started to unbutton my pants before I reached the restroom

Doesn't everyone do this?

i have a sixty mile bladder -----------
I have a 2 hour bladder - on a good day.

I can do a 6 hour trip to town and back with no thought of the bladder but as soon as I hit the door? Better not be anyone in the bathroom!
I have no problem doing a 4+ hour roadtrip south to Milwaukee without stopping along the way, drives the DH nuts! He knows where every rest stop (and a few secluded side roads) are

Just an FYI (Don't watch the added video in the article until after you've eaten breakfast)

Germany to become the first country to ban the live SHREDDING of unwanted male chicks

It kinda figures it would be Germany; they are pretty sensitive on "animal cruelty" issues. A number of years ago, they enacted legislation banning any deliberate breeding that could result in the death or "suffering" of the offspring due to genetic issues. As a result, it became illegal for rabbit breeders to do dwarf-to-dwarf breedings, since some of the offspring would inherit two copies of the dwarfing gene and that's a lethal combination. But the definition of suffering is a bit broad. There is a lop-eared rabbit breed that has very long ears; if the ears are long enough, the rabbit might step on them, and get scratches from its own claws. Because of this legislation, it is illegal to breed rabbits with ears longer than a certain length, since it falls under the definition of "cruel."

Dang...

I used to be safe in polite society... I supose that that is no longer the case
I've caught myself doing the same thing. Comes from spending the bulk of one's time with animals and plants. They don't care.

The Kiwi biologist I worked with at a Macaw breeding facility in Costa Rica was once asked to get off of a plane because he smelled so bad.
We just didn't pay much attention and the Macaws don't care. There was 1 shower at the facility and he was very tall. He was always getting shocked from his head touching the wires of the heater on the shower head.

I'm fine for 6 hours as long as I don't drink coffee or beer. All bets are off after that. Tea and water don't seem to have the same effect. Good think I quit drinking coffee.
And, like you, when it's time - it's time.

I think that's honorable.

I really like this

I think its highly unethical to slaughter them at day old.

me, Im sure others here too.

My hope is that this sexing inside eggshell will get cheaper over time

So we can do it too!
Sexing in the shell only works for breeds that are sexlinked. They are looking into the shell to look for the sex linked differences.

You could do it now with the correct breed and equipment.

Hint: It is never going to work for most of us.

I know!

It is a big news item that is very limited.

What might work is a genetic test but that would be very expensive for the testing equipment so until back yard prices were low enough, Only big commercial places would use it.

A big problem would be getting the sample from millions of eggs. Many of the big egg batteries that have a million hens need to hatch out several million chicks each year.

Those of you that live in cold climates will appreciate this. Today we're supposed to go up to 42! While we have not had a bad winter by any stretch of the imagination, the last few weeks we've been below freezing day and night, causing poop-sickles to occur in the coop. With the thaw today I figured I'd get an opportunity to chisel the stinkers out of there before spring nastiness.

Well...

At least I got 2/3 of the coop done before this happened.
