The Old Folks Home

But you clean daily. Some people don't unless they have a handful of birds. A lot of the people in our local chicken group clean every morning. I don't think I'd have the time.
4 or 5 times a year here unless the stocking density is high in a building and then I have to muck out more often. I have one building with a poop board and it does keep the bedding cleaner a lot longer. I'm going to modify that one today or tomorrow so I can slide it out and dump it. I'm also planning poop boards in some of the other buildings.

Adding fresh shavings is the key. The weather had to be warm for almost a week here before it thawed enough to muck out.

I just checked the weather. The humidity is 84%. At least it's above freezing. We'll get some 20s soon.
High humidity year round. I don't thing sand would even be an option when the air is always saturated.

Yes I do clean every day but time? 1 to 1.5 minutes. I have 16 girls (maybe that is a handful??) using ~30' of roost in groupings they choose so it isn't like everyone is pooping in the same place. I wouldn't necessarily be able to do a "deep cleaning" but I can always rake the surface enough to spread the nightly deposits around.

) it DOES get cold here. We only hit 0F three times in January and it isn't predicted to go that low again this month so we are warm this winter. It hit at or near -10F six times January last year and hit at or near -20F three times in February, -10F or below twelve times. It only hit -10F once in March. I don't know what you call cold in your neck of Alaska, but I think a majority of people would say that when the snow you are walking on at -10F squeaks, it is cold

I am with CC, reverse the hinges in the spring.

Or NOW! Probably take less time than chipping away at frozen litter to make sure the door can open.

Its perfect.... How San Diego used to get rain. Now if the city will just cut down all the dead trees we will be in good shape.

It will take a couple more years of rain like this. to replenish anything.

But We are finally in our green season...

In a lot of So Cal "green season" is kinda like Brigadoon - LOTS of years before you see it again

But brown IS a nice color, right?

Is it just me, or do they look like wild rabbits?

Looks a lot like our rabbit! It is wild but has figured out we aren't meaning it any harm. It will sit still as we walk past 5' away and talking to it.

Could not survive the winter without one of these. I would never be able to get a gate open, break loose, the poop lumps in the way (or so I wouldn't trip over them) or clear ice from door tracks, etc. Which, BTW, I had better make sure I know where this invaluable tool is located so it doesn't disappear beneath the blizzard they put up the warning for a little while ago that should hit us mid day tomorrow.
