The Old Folks Home

All this talk of weather, you'd think we had run out of things to talk about! Or were all old......

I have four "President" Clematis vines starting on my dining room table. I bought five Canna "Wyoming" and some mixed Crocosmia, in bare root. I also have "Margarite" potato vine, large bloom orange marigolds, mixed Zinnias in yellow and orange, and yellow crook neck squash in starter pots. I plan to make a flowerbed in the back, against a wall, with perennial bones and room for annual color/variety. I have to harden off the Clematis, but the rest are ready to plant.

I am feeling the urge to get my hands dirty!

morning Wisher!!!
I used to grow lots of different annuals and propagate perennials (I am a master gardener with all my gardens certified organic) but we kept expanding the veggie and herb gardens, added chickens, turned into an "old folk" so something had to go. Now most of my lovingly labored flower gardens look pretty sad. I have a ton of work to do this year just to get the herb gardens back into shape after a full year of neglect because of the long rehab from the stupid fall I took. Thankfully the weather this spring is giving me an unexpected (and really appreciated) head start on everything. I am actually being able to get a ton of things done BEFORE the new chicks arrive (May 3) this year. WHAT A BLESSING! Who knows? If I can survive the pace, I might even be able to resurrect a flower bed or two this year!!! Have to buy most plants this year tho because I didn't get hardly anything started. I'm still trying to kick the feathered rototillers out of the greenhouse!

I am having an "I must make a roadtrip to my favorite garden center/nursery/greenhouse today!!!!" attack!
Oh honey, sweetie, love of my life, can hook up the trailer for me? I need to "grocery" shopping.

Oh, and could you "evict" the girls from the greenhouse while I'm gone, pretty please????

Sounds great Wisher!

I have been busy planting and setting up a couple kiddie pool gardens. There is a Nankin Cherry bush in the white 5 gallon bucket. and in the wood raised bed I have lettuce, onions, carrots, cuc's, broccoli, cauliflower and a squash. I also have some tomato's and herbs planted in pots. Can you see the owl I had to buy to keep the squirrels out of my strawberries! It works!
This kiddie pool is my strawberry bed with a tomato planted in the middle. I did take the tomato out and put it in a grow bag.

This is my kiddie pool hybrid garden. It has a float in it to keep the water at 2" and a hole for over flow in case it rains. I have tomato's, turnips and baby crabapple trees planted in it. The bags are re-use-able walmart grocery bags for .50 cents each. They are great for wickening. I also planted some German chamomile and marigolds in the beds.

I had to Google President Clematis....lovely!!

Here are a few pics of what's blooming here in northern Illinois:
Tulips, three different daffodils (you can see a tulip in the background of the last one), apricot bloom, Lapins cherry blooms, Bluebell buds and grape hyacinth.

We are down to 13 chicks :( one died in the night and I am surprised another one did not die we got home aroun 3:00 and we had been gone since 9:00 and one had jumped out of the brooder when I found her she was cold it was below 70 it looked as if she had stayed in one spot she had pooped there 4 times she is fine now.
