Broody hen ended up with 5 chicks. Two hatched with her one of those died. 4 in incubator. All doing well with her.

Feeding fermented feed to them and Altsteirer see how that does.

Really thought this bunch wouldn't make it. Several eggs broke covering the other eggs. It was in a 5 gallon bucket with no insulation and very cold at times.

There are now 4 more hens going broody. I gave eggs to the one that seemed most attentive. Bout got my fingers pecked doing so.

poor babies,  I don't blame them.  Do you have some other chicks you could put near them , in a cage?    They might come out and try to be with them.

Water hose, pet carrier, 2 sheets of plywood, 1 sheet of lattice worked like a charm. They escaped the water into the pet carrier. The fox only got 3 birds. The rest are safe.

The Trader Joes flock is Hy-line 36 pullets and Hy-line brown Cockerels. They are specially bread so no, they are not RIRs.
