We know about heat in the south. I like to save 20 oz. drink bottles and fill them 2/3 full of water and freeze them at an angle so they don't bust. I put them in the waterers and swap them out as they melt.

I am lucky in that I have a spring that runs through my property near the coop. It is in deep shade and noticeably cooler there. The chickens are often hanging out there, just standing in the cool water.

That pair of Reds are by far the best quality birds I have on the place....    In the evening, the rooster stands in the corner of his pen, on the ground, and the hen puts her head down and squeezes between his legs.  That's how they sleep.  They are so funny.

I have also been putting gallon milk jugs in the freezer and using them in the waterers. But I have always given my birds either a sprinkler or puddles to get in or both. We went to dirt cheap and bought some fans for our rabbits. We got 5 for what one would have cost at Wally World.


Wisher your birds sleeping like that is just to cute.

Ron and Deb it gets well over a 100* here and the humidity goes on up into the 100% range but mostly stays very high like between 60-80%.

Wisher you are very lucky to have a creek and be able to free range your chickens.
We have a creek way back behind our property that most of the farmers up and down 80 use to water their crops and livestock. However our property does not back up to that.
