A very very very tragic thing happened today. so two friends came over and my little sister came in crying and I couldn't here what she was saying but I heard dog, chicken, and killed I slipped on my shoes and ran out to save what I thought was 1 chicken and all of them were dead

we couldn't find the 11nth one so we thought the dog ate it but the had gotten into the run knocked over what was keeping the chicken door shut and killed them there were bodies everywhere

the dog even got in the coop and she didn't eat them just killed them so we then thought that possibly the missing one had gotten away and we called it and it never came so I went inside then I thought of a place the chick could be hiding and I ran out and looked and sure enough it was there but it wasn't moving at all and was laying down and them it just sprang to life so out of all 15 we ordered 1 is left the dog killed ten

and the one is very lonely and bored

It was my little sisters dog. I can't really blame the dog though because she's retarded.

It is very sad. It has happened to me a also. You can look online on some facebook poultry pages or craigs list for people with chicks if you decide you want to try again.

but I didn't mean to say today it was yesterday so the chick was all alone all night I was dreaming about us renting chickens to keep her company and them out and me having to catch them and keeping the dogs from getting the chickens so I had that dream over and over again.

And do I need to get some the same age and kind as the last one?

Folks here should spend some time reading the "New Members Intro " thread to see how very common it is for their new chicks, flocks, whatever to be wiped out in minutes.

The usual scenario is it's the owners dog (cats too) that massacred them. I have been a dog lover all my life but I still believe Dogs and chickens should NEVER meet. A chicken has never killed a dog (or cat) while dog & chicken encounters frequently end in death for the chicken. The dog has fun, the chicken does not..

I was surprised by the number of times the predator was a small or toy breed of dog, frequently a Chihuahua, Yorkie, Doxie. I wouldn't think them capable. Certainly other breeds of dog (and mutts) kill plenty and it is easier for them to muscle their way into a coop or pen with poor or no locking device. The small breeds can slip through more places, dig under, or just wait for their chance to be free when no one is watching.
