The Old Folks Home

Hey, JD!

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, buddy - though when you mentioned it, my first thought was that we have at least one other person here with Meniere's; the name seemed awfully familiar. The tinnitus, though, is even more familiar - I'm not sure there's anyone here that doesn't have that.

I know I've had it since I was a small child; though it's gotten worse over the years. I've almost gotten used to the glasses, I fear hearing aids are probably in my future . . . .

Thanks chicki? The tinnitis is so annoying. Actually I have had tinnitis off and on since I was sixteen. It's genetic. Know this though, I will fight it every step of the way.
It sounds like you are on the right track!

This link has stuff you have likely already seen: http://vestibular.org/understanding-vestibular-disorders/treatment/vestibular-diet

It might be a good idea to see a Registered Dietitian to make sure you have a good plan for eating and nutrition --and a bit of accountability.

I posted this on another thread this morning and I think this is the best forum to get this word out. Please spread the word.

Now for soapbox time. This is really important for the future of backyard and small flock poultry. There have been over 600 cases this year across the country of people contracting salmonella from handling pet poultry.
For those that allow small children to handle poultry, don't allow kissing and make sure you wash them up immediately afterward.
This goes for adults as well. Always wash hands with soap and water immediately after handling poultry or anything where poultry live.
I can't stress this one enough. It is recommended to never keep poultry in the house - including chicks and ducklings. That dust gets everywhere. They belong out in a brooder house - not a bedroom.
As someone who has fought in city after city across the area challenging city councils to allow chicken keeping, it is always an issue that is raised as to why they shouldn't be allowed. They don't understand why we don't want to buy store eggs and chicken meat.
I've had council members quote the CDC word for word on multiple occasions saying that the CDC recommends:

  • Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water right after touching live poultry or anything in the area where the birds live and roam;
  • Do not let live poultry inside the house; and
  • Do not let children younger than 5 years of age handle or touch chicks, ducklings or other live poultry without adult supervision.

I counter by saying that they say the same about dogs and cats but dogs and cats are legal.
If we continue to allow this to get out of control, the pendulum of more backyard poultry being allowed will certainly swing the other way.

Tinnitus... yup, got that one covered here as well. I actually go for my hearing aid fitting next Monday. Mine is due to many years in the Navy around aircraft with loud engines. I've learned to ignore/not hear the constant ringing, but right now, while discussing it, it's right there droning in both ears. Finally got tired of always saying "huh?" and "what" to my daughter. Mine are covered by the VA as it's a service connected disability.

After all these years she STILL hasn't learned to SPEAK UP, and as many times as I've explained my hearing loss to her, she still sometimes gets aggravated when I don't hear her the first time. Her voice falls right in the middle of my worst frequency range. I get aggravated when she starts talking then turns away from me while doing so. That makes it even harder to hear/understand what she's saying. Ah well...

I was always careful to wear my PPE in hazardous conditions. I remember in an ROTC high school, one of the military instructors had very bad hearing from being in artillery for so long.
I never wanted that to happen to me. Any time around weaponry, I'd use ear plugs. In extremely loud factory environments, I always used earplugs and in the worst situations, head phones.
After nearly 40 years of loud environments, my hearing is still good. The only time I was remiss was at rock concerts.
People used to get mad at me for wearing gas masks when working in the paint kitchen in an automobile plant.
I never planned on dying at a young age.

Tinnitus here too, lifetime (so far). There is the usual drone (above High C) that is mostly ignored but every now and then it rises an octave to a high pitch whine.

Good luck Jimmy!

I have had(noticed) tinnitus since 1981. I was sitting by a window and thought I heard a lot of crickets. Then it dawned on me is was very cold outside, crickets wouldn't be "cricketing." Duh! I also get buzzing, electric noise kinda things, and sometimes signals from space (I jest).

Most of the time I can ignore it, but, when the house gets quiet at night, the din sounds so loud to me, that I think someone next to me, probably could hear it. Guess not. Hope not.
