The Old Folks Home

Have to add my kudos to your beautiful work SCG. Where do you find the time?

I had a rough day today but not as rough as our oldest cat. We noticed 2 weeks ago that he is loosing weight. He is a lively 16 and just a sweet solid black, half Siamese half mischief maker miniature panther. We took him to the vet who weighed him and had us come back today. After two weeks of throwing food at him constantly we found out he had lost another half pound. They did blood work and the verdict was diabetes. His blood sugar is almost 500. OUCH! So now I am doing something I didn't think I'd be doing again. Giving insulin shots to a patient twice a day. Being retired means I'm taking care of patients again only these have four legs or 2 legs with feathers.

The pay sucks but the rewards are immeasurable.

Thanks Penny1960 and Perchie.Girl.

We really hope this gives us a few more quality years with him. He's really a very nice boy that was given to us as a stray. Several subdivisions in the town where we worked knew him and took care of him. They were afraid he was going to get hit by a car and looked for a good home for him. They knew we loved cats so they offered him to us and we gladly gave him a home. He's been in our lives for 8 years now.

The vet also mentioned the possibility of a pancreatic tumor. We are trying to think positive.

Thanks Penny. We have his labs. I think the vet is more concerned as to what caused this sudden weight loss (he dropped from over 15 pounds to 11.5 pounds in about two months, eating like a moose the whole time and peeing like a race horse. We suspected DM two weeks ago but they wanted to track him for two weeks. He said the question is what made an older, healthy cat suddenly become diabetic and that pointed to the possibility of a pancreatic tumor. Hopefully when we take him back in a month he'll show at least some stability in his weight and better labs. If not, we will have to reevaluate the situation and do what is best for our Johnny Cash, the cat in black.
