I'm sorry Penny. Can't you call the nurses station and ask them to let you talk to her?

I moved my parents across the street from me and we were close for the first time ever.

I'm totally grossed and trust me I'm pretty gross-proof.

I'd noticed a suspicious hole near my grow out coop. It was in a fenced area where it was safe for dogs and Chickens so I dumped a piece of 'one bite'down the hole, back filled the hole and didn't think much more of it till I went out tonight to lock up the birds and found a half dead rat trying to break into the grow out pen. My broody who is still with her 7 week old chicks was going freakin nutz and I can't blame her. I had a piece of oak in the run that I had been using for roosts. The rat was easily dispatched and burried. Thank goodness it wasn't very big but it is the first rat I've seen on the farm. I guess I always knew it was a matter of time, especially since feed is around. But man, I HATE those little beggers.

Guess it's time to put bait traps out in the barn and buy some mechanical traps to set out of harms way. Hopefully if there were more they found the bait also.

Three cheers for my broody for recognizing danger and keeping her 'kids' safe.

Quote: As soon as I get cleared from lung Dr, I get to have a lump removed from my breast, which will be biopsies. PET scan says it's turned cancerous. Dr says there is a possibility of a false positive. Won't know for sure until after the surgery, and can't get the surgery until the lungs are healed.

I hope you get an all clear! Sending prayers!

I've got rats again (Tis the season?). I killed off the one that came a few weeks ago under my porch. A few days ago one moved in under the ducks (a very popular place for rats, historically). I once lifted up the duck house, had a rat run out and I beat it to death with the shovel... not a good day.

Anyway, I put traps out last night (I put traps in a chicken cage so only rodents can get through... so I thought) and this morning they weren't sprung. Thinking (or not) that I could just move the cage to the top of the duck house (with traps still set to reuse in the evening)...

Came out this evening to find a horrible sight - a chickadee had tried to eat the peanut butter.

I need to make some atonement for that sin.

I feel awful, but definitely not as bad as the chickadee felt.

Oh man you need some positive Karma, SCG!

I just finished reading a thread from last year that suggested using a bait made from Raw sugar and concrete mix (I imagine the sand or fine Sacrete form of the stuff) It was 2/3rds sugar and 1/3 concrete, mixed until sugar is gray and put out where only the rodents can get to it. Seems as though they eat the mix, the concrete hardens in their gut and kills them. Might be worth a try. I also have a small squirrel sized live trap I think I'll employ also just to make sure the little disease carrier didn't invite friends and relatives to move in with it.

I heard of one where you put out dry instant potatoes (flakes) and near it, a pan of water. They get thirsty from eating flakes, drink water and the flakes expand in their stomach
