The Old Folks Home

That was how the weatherman opened the story on the deep freeze moving south. He said Maine would be colder than everywhere in Siberia too.

I've just come in from being outside for only 10 minutes and I have nothing polite to say about the current weather conditions. And they'll only be getting worse. Tomorrow the projected high will be 8F with 45 mph wind.

I would have to agree with your weatherman.

WIND CHILLS WILL BE DANGEROUS TO ANYONE NOT TAKING SHELTER TONIGHT. SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES ARE POSSIBLE DUE TO THE STRONG WINDS. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN. IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS... MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HAT AND GLOVES.

I'm not sure why they are called paws.... or why they are nearly $2 a pound... but my local walmart has them for some reason...

I can remember my mom telling me about eating chicken feet as a little girl. When she told me I remember asking her if she was sure they were chicken feet and she said yes she was sure. She said they would buy them for next to nothing. She was born and spent her early childhood in southern Kentucky.

is still my reaction. It has to be an acquired taste.....like pickled tripe was to my dad.

I know for a fact that the central Illinois town I was born in there was a bar that every year would advertise their annual raccoon fry. I wish there was an emoji that went straight from gag to hurl. I got nauseated just thinking about what those nasty things eat.....besides our chickens whenever they get the chance.

Wickedchicken6, so glad you got your girl back. My Billie was sired by a leopard App. She was, looking at her from a distance, coal black but when you got up close you could see that she was peppered with white hairs. Somebody told me to shave a patch on her butt and I did. Sure enough, you could see mottling on her skin. I was glad that I could find her a good home. She went to a family with a young boy, 9 years old who was dying for want of a horse of his own. I heard when they unloaded her, he slapped a bridle on her, climbed on bare back and they went galloping off together. He was over joyed. The last I heard they had bred her to an Appaloosa stud and invited me to come see her when ever I wanted. I couldn't bear it. I made myself forget their names and to this day pray that she had a good, happy life. My husband recently asked me if I would like to have another horse. I told him no, I had a great horse that could never be matched and my back was too bad to do the work that a horse needs. Then I laughed and told him, besides, IF I could do the work, I'd get a mule......always wanted a mule, LOL. I can remember my dad telling me stories about the 'Jugheads' that he had to take care of when he was in the army prior to WW II. Always thought they were interesting animals.

I can't believe how some people can live with themselves. Seriously. I'm reminded of the story a city boy told about driving through a small town and stopping at a diner for breakfast. Sitting at the counter he heard two men reading newspapers and talking. 1st man said. "I read here that Joe Bob got himself shot last night. 2nd man said, 'Yep. Got caught with Big Jim's wife.' 1st man 'Did he die?' 2nd man 'Yep..' 1st man 'Well, that boy needed killin' anyway.'

Sometimes I truly believe that Karma just catches up with some folks.

Thank you. We didn't want her to go to slaughter (that's what they were planning to do) We have enough land, she's got her own pasture and everything.
Oooh black! Billy sounds gorgeous.

I always wanted a black horse; black with white markings, all black, mottled...just something black. Closest I got was the deep chocolate of her spots and my gelding, deep chocolate with his blanket. I washed my girl once and same thing, dark and light mottling under the skin...which is really neat!

It sounds like Billy went to a good home. They wouldn't have invited you if they weren't taking good care of her. They probably thought it would make you happy to see how well she was doing. I happened across a cattle breeders list with the name of the people who sold our Appy to us. I called them and filled them in on how she was doing. I think they were a bit surprised that she is still alive (as am I...lol) They were happy to hear she was living a pretty carefree life.

Oh my gosh. But, then everyone knows everyone in a small town. Can't get away with much, that's for sure. We've been fortunate to have only two couples be dishonest with us and both seemed to have met Karma head on since. I believe the same, Karma does seem to catch up with folks. It's always best to be on the good side of Karma.

Forgot to add that a mule is one animal I know nothing about.

Quote: Maybe he did a bad deal with someone else... They may not hang horse thieves anymore, but maybe they shoot them?
Some thought it was his wife. Some thought it was possible drug dealing..lol. Some thought it had something to do with the real hit being involved with the Hells Angels. It happened about a decade ago. I don't think it'll be solved. He worked away on the oil as well. Who knows what he could have gotten himself into. HIs Mother and step father lived a mile north of us. I can't imagine doing what he did to someone I didn't know...to do what they did to us (not that it was super horrible, but still) who live so close by...takes a mindset I can't fathom and don't want to. If he did dealings like with us...I'm not surprised he may have gotten in over his head.

It was a weird scenario. The kids were home sleeping apparently, didn't hear anything. She was supposed to have been gone to town. I was taking my son to town for a birthday party and drove past when all the cop cars were there. I knew it hadn't been something very good.
