The Old Folks Home

SCG ah, go back to bed (what I would do) maybe it's just a bad dream

You know you are getting old when  you live in Missouri, look at your clock and at 11 o'clock say "It's midnight on the east coast! Close enough! Happy New Year everybody!" and go to bed.

From our house to yours, wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year!

G'night.

I am on the east coast and went to sleep at 10 got up at 12:15 to go to the bathroom and it sounded like they had just started setting them off... went back to bed...

I hope everyone had a happy new year! There were fireworks, and gunshots all around, but Dh went to work, the cat curled up in my lap, and we slept through it all.

you and I both they said my spinal column in my neck is closing it will paralyze me if I don't
well so be be it I will not roll over and play dead
So you are to refrain from excessive work/movement but continue light work? That's what I understand too. I've got something going on either the upper thoracic or lower cervical that maintains constant low grade pain, not a big deal. But my hands and arms lose feeling all the time. I don't think it has anything with my shoulders popping out of joint though.

My huge deal is lower lumbar L3-S1, same like you closing up and causing lots of fun. And I'm plating up the back as far as they've taken X-rays. They ask how I did that much damage and I'm like

'cause I never played sports or anything like that. BUT when I was moving the roosters from the coop to the tractor shed, I realized I wasn't limping. First time in 4 years!

I guess the inflammation and disks must still be slowly repairing themselves. Quite wonderful. It'd be nice to walk without the goofy limp.

@perchie.girl 's dry place is more the area I am familiar with....

That wet stuff you have @microchick would make me keep pinching myself.... as in "how can grass be that green and grow THAT fast"

My place is odd... probably super productive like microchick...for two months...then horrid dark and cold and snow and ice for the rest of the year..

In this photo you can see how the lawn is still green and growing... but all native forage is totally dead....so Fall.
Our lawn used to green up first thing in the spring and go brown about August, which worked well since we were combining. Who has time for mowing in harvest?
hmm.png

Now the grass NEVER goes brown. It's still green underneath the snow. I can see it when I'm clearing. Great for the pastures and cattle. Not so great for the mowing.

Perchie.girl, I absolutely LOVE the desert. My husband and I were married in southern Arizona and I think if moving wasn't so much danged work we would probably have retired to a desert climate both for our health and because he hates mowing as much lawn as he mows now.

Me, I love the sand, chaparral, mesquite and rock landscape.

Wickedchicken6, your landscape almost looks like Illinois farmland. Without the trees. Very pretty. Our pasture on our land will grow mixed grass and clover forage that will get about 4 and in some places 5 foot tall. Since we have been mowing about 2/3rd of it to use as a flying field for our RC planes, the natural occurring weeds have been knocked back and we are noticing that the grass is coming in thicker and healthier. The field day we attended concerning rotational grazing promoted that this would happen if pasture was either used for a rotation schedule of being grazed for X number of days and then livestock removed from it for X number of days allowing the grass to recover. It also happens if the pasture is mowed.

Alaskan might know more about this but we were also told that the health of the pasture by the number of earth worms int he root base of the grass. To prove his point, he pulled a clump of grass and there were a bunch of wigglers dangling from the roots. He promoted cattle turning the grass into A)fertilizer and B)mulch the latter by simply walking on the grass and treading it over.

Superchemicalgirl. Stay safe and warm. Isn't it remarkable how fast Mother Nature can knock you back in time 300 years? I almost feel guilty that our winter is in a mild spell right now with the sun shining and temps in the 40s. But this is the Midwest. If you don't like the weather, hang around for a few hours cause it may change!
I'm going to look up Illinois when I have the chance! The one thing about where we live is we have water. From what I understand, even when it was the driest of years...there was enough water for both people and cattle here. Where I grew up (about 20 miles from here) we had to conserve all the time, there was never enough. Every year they pumped water. I'm always skeptical of leaving here...just for the fact of the water. I've lived without the water. I don't want to ever do without again.

Our walk behind snow blower may/may not work. It's been sitting for about 4 years. But the garage door is broke at our place and we can't get it out until it's fixed. We're getting 4-6 inches just about everyday too!

DH is going

because we're still nowhere close to being cleared from last weekend. I can't even get the tractor to clear snow because he's had it everyday clearing. We have to vaccinate the cows soon and it's too high for the cattle to get around where we work with them, let alone us get around. I hope your snow stops.

MIL was saying they're clearing roofs in town because there were a couple of warm days and it's melted a bit and it's too heavy for the roofs. It's all big chunks of ice.

That's interesting about you the worms. Not something I know much about. I know we have earthworms. That's about it.

Regarding the ivermectin...the other part was concern over the effect it had on the dung beetles and bugs that broke down manure. The ivermectin kills the beneficial working bugs and the manure is not effectively broken down.

Happy New Years to you too, Cynthia, and to everyone!!!

We did stay up until about 1:30am watching a couple of movies. Our son called us at 12 to wish us a Happy New Year...which was nice. (He was at his girl friend's) I was freezing to death and couldn't get warm. Now I know why, I'm under the weather today. Not too bad...I just feel crappy with no energy. Still trying to muster the energy to get out to my chickies. Sorry this is so l-o-n-g. Didn't think I could remember everything without quoting...lol.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Wow Alaskan I can't believe you still have green grass! Ours is brown and dead! The cows come to the front gate and holler till DH goes out to feed the. lol

Crazy info on worms Alaskan.

Microchick I hear ya on the syrup. Don't forget to try it on fish and chicken it's wonderful.
On the other hand Ron said his dd liked the pecan so hopefully he will try to make some.
* when I said double handful I meant to put your hands together and scoop up a good size pile to crack and cook.*

Scg I tried the Westalle stencils and they do not work with my low shank Baby Lock. I tried my darning foot and my embroidery foot and they are just to low.
They are made from Plexiglas so even for my machine they would need to be double thickness. They sell a low shank foot on that site also but they want 55.00 for it.
