The Old Folks Home

My doctor called me 'atypical for a 63 year old'. He knows me well, LOL. Atypical.... I like that term too. Fascinating is good also. Are you sure we aren't really twins and were separated at birth?

could be twins, by different mothers

Of course I am 6 years older than you but, maybe you were overdue and I popped out early. I was 6 lbs.9 oz. no wonder I turned out small.

Yes sir ree BoB I am Fascinating

Doesn't life give us surprises as we grow old and seem to fit in better with weird quirky
attitudes talking to our chickens or cock a doodle doing at at our cockerels

I would guess that as long as you don't go to the meeting dressed up as the grim reaper-ette, they'll probably be thankful for the help. I mean after you've done all the work they can boast to whomever about what they've done to better the cemeteries during their tenure... I'm glad that you've found something (aside from quilting) that captivates you and that you feel strongly about. It's something special to have an interest that can "hold you" and also provide a service to so many others, some of which are no longer with us. Good luck!

Guess who got herself invited to the next meeting of the town Cemetery Committee?

I've requested of the town manager to "adopt" the 4 local cemeteries near me and start cleaning and minimal straightening work, for now, with eventual plans to begin preservation work like fixing broken stones and replacing bases.

I'm not sure exactly how this will go, the Cemetery Committee appears to be the only local committee that is "full" (and always is full) but I almost never see work done in our cemeteries besides grounds work. All done correctly and with survey work beforehand, pictures before and after and logs of what I've done.

I am going to come armed with a proposal for cost to start the cleaning and un-leaning process, plus an application for a MOCA workshop at one of the bigger cemeteries (just "cleaning and leaning").

If my town says no the sexton of one of the nearby towns says I can assist her on a volunteer basis.

Can't start the work until the ground thaws, so likely May/June timeframe, so I've got plenty of time. The meeting is in one week.

That's awesome. Good luck!
You keep this up and I might actually get involved, I don't want to but it's crappy. Ticks me off, and I know it does others, but no one makes a move. So many in rough shape, excluding the outskirt one's, there's one in town, Pioneer cemetery, and they fight over who should mow it. We're so small here though there is no cemetery committee.

If only I can keep my freak flag from flying for an hour or so. At least until I get my permit.

So..don't plan on pulling into the parking lot with Type O cranking? No 'Dead Again'? ...Lol! :-D
Good luck, a lot of lost history in cemeteries and I love history.

You should get involved. I'd certainly of course rather spend my free time doing something else, but the way I see it, I enjoy the cemeteries, the history and the sheer beauty of them, and not many others are standing up to do it so it's worthwhile. There's only so much time we have before they're significantly damaged. So someone has to do it. There's ways to start a cemetery committee or even a "Friends Of..." to help raise funds to pay someone to do the work. There's a lot of scout community service projects that are done in cemeteries which is a source of free and eager labor (the plots still need long term maintenance after the scouts do the initial work). The first step would be to figure out who or what runs your town and just set up a meeting to discuss what's already being done and how you can help. You don't have to commit to anything but it might make you feel better to know what the town is already doing. Most of the people that attended the 4 day workshop with me were retirees who were looking to get involved. Many of them already had a cemetery that they were assigned

I am likely going to need to find a partner here in town. Many of the smaller stones I can lift by myself but the larger ones I'll need additional bodies or a tripod. The tripods are wicked expensive. I might be able to borrow one from another town when I need to, and I need to look into that. The sexton I know borrows hers from another town with one. She's offered to help me initially with the work, but she's a full time sexton and her cemeteries are a mess in her own town, so I can't reasonably rely on her.

And as far as the TON goes, it will blast from my speakers forever. Amen.

...I just might pick something a little more appropriate for my entrance. Summer Breeze or Cinnamon Girl or maybe even Day Tripper... maybe.
