The Old Folks Home

@superchemicalgirl The goats are PB Lamanchas. No papers, but I can get them if I desire later. They are "show quality" so with papers I could get into showing if I really wanted. I may in fact do so down the road, we'll see.

One of my girls is a half la manacha. I love the cute little ears. She is, however, a total jerk.

Wicked, why are you on the fence about resigning?

Before we bought our place, a couple that works with, and are good friends of ours, lived in the city for years. They bought land, and had a home built out in the country, and kept touting the advantages, and how much they loved living in the country, to Dh. Shortly after we moved into our place, they needed salt for their softener, and Dh was going to get some, so he got some for them too, and we took it to them. They weren't home at the time, but it was a nice big home, and there was a lot of land around them.

Last night, they invited us to go visit them. We did. Since the time we dropped off the salt, a LOT more houses have gone in, sidewalks put in, and fences have been put up. Come to find out, it's a deed restricted subdivision with 1 acre lots. To them, they're out in the country. When we got home, I commented that while they have a nice house, I really like the layout of our home much better. Dh looked at me, and said "yeah, me too." "In fact, I like our whole set up much better." He got no argument from me.

Sorry Clue... sub divisions w/deed restrictions, one acre lots, sidewalks, are all completely opposite to "country" living.

Well SCG, I met the girls before I bought them and they were properly friendly vice scared and stand-off-ish. Might have been that I had hands full of grain...

They weren't screamers or ultra noisy, which I like. At least if they start screaming I'll know something bad is happening and grab the gun on the way to check it out.

I've been working on fencing it seems since I bought this place Al. Right now they'll be kept in a dry lot area with a hoop house for shelter. The dry lot is 50" x 16' cattle panels and is about 250-300 square feet. Once I get the first pasture completely enclosed, they'll have ~1.5-2 acres to roam around on.

This is Bang... she's the one who just had twins

This is Dot and she's due the end of the month w/prob twins.

I don't have a picture of the third doe as I agreed to swap the one I was supposed to get (which was pregnant) with a different one (that was not pregnant) so that the seller would have two milkers vice one.

Dh got our wicking bed done today I am so excited! Now to get planting!

It's 6.5x8 and I have now idea how much potting mix it will take to fill it up...

Each of these walmart bags holds 7 gallons of mix. I had a bunch but now I'm worried I need a truck load!

thats what I was afraid of when I started looking for a Place with Space especially in California.... anywhere that was reasonably priced twenty years ago is now been bulldozed and houses put in at the density of 10 units per acre... Some so dense they dont have fences between the buildings. one building wall is the others fence....

I wanted to live out... And I lucked out finding mine... in my area the parcel size is a minimum of ten acres.... My property is eighteen acres therefore it cant be split. But seriously if they start splitting each into ten acre parcels that will be too many people for me.

you will save money by buying it from a dirt company. Give them the depth width and length of your bed and they will calculate how many yards you will need.

What is your definition of 'country' is what I'm going to ask people from now on when they say "OH! We moved to the COUNTRY!".

5 year ago our then accountant told us that he and his wife were building a home in the country and then proceeded to take the entire appointment time telling us about the imported marble that they were having shipped in from Italy, blah blah blah. This was after we had bought our simple Amish built home with absolutely no ammenities what so ever and a dead sheep or cow in every pasture.

Before we left we asked him where his new rural home was and he said, 'oh, you drive by it every time you go to your Missouri property' and told us exactly where it was. "there is a lake and everything" he said. Well, sure enough, next trip home we drove by his country home.....on the interstate, less than five miles from town. Yes, it was a new gated subdivision. Yes it had a lake. We were still laughing when we pulled into our driveway. Country gravel road, almost 3 miles from the blacktop, no electricity until 4 years ago, Amish men on horseback driving a herd of 25+ horses between pastures, coming home to find the neighbor's flock of sheep had taken up residence on our back porch, oh, and there was last summer when we were outside and saw a young heifer trot up the road...by herself. DH laughed and said, 'bet our accountant doesn't see that in front of his new country home.'

So like I said, define 'country'.

it can range from a half acre on.... here. I think the difference is zoning. Minimum size property for horses is a quarter acre per horse... there are areas that are somewhat dense odd lot sizes some small houses some big.... Most have livestock of somesort....

I dont want to live that way .... I want to be able to "hear em coming" .... And I can from about forty acres away. My property has a well and electrictity... barely. The well runs dry If I draw from it more than about half hour. Electricity goes off when the wind blows or Rain falls hard.... Voltage goes up and down too. Its killed two refrigerators now.

This is country but not farm country.... Desert. loaded with wild medicinals and a few jack rabbits. Mule deer wander through taking advantage of the horse trough and hay bales. People here are used to subsisting on what they have. or can trade for...
