The Old Folks Home

yep.... Too funny. Liked Heinline both eras as well. The Rolling Stones and Starship troopers were written for young teens .... then when he broke away from the publisher he wrote them for.... I will fear no evil, Stranger in a Strange Land, The moon is a harsh mistress, Have space suit will Travel, ......

Hey right with you there still on my first cup, late night with pyrenees puppy moved the crate massive exhibition crate somehow
she is getting out of it and I had moved it to the barn yesterday hoping to work with her get her back to guarding them not
playing tag with them
Good luck with that. I can't convince my dogs that chickens aren't chew toys or crunchy munchies. Although one Border Collie will guard them.....as long as theya re in their pen.

I've had a rough day. Think I finally figured out the 5 mysterious deaths I've had in my flock over the past year. I think I have Marek's in my flock in spite of them being penned and from disease resistant birds, spoiled and pampered not to mentioned loved. Just so p***** right now. What next, as they say.

As for books. Anyone read Time Enough For Love the Lives and Loves of Lazarus Long? Great book.

Sorry about the rough day!

Before making long term plans, get a necropsy test even if it is expensive. It can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Thanks ronott1. I plan to do that upon the next death, and I have a feeling there will be a next death. My 'OH CRAP' moment was when I saw one of my BO hens with unequal pupils suddenly have a pale green iris instead of a gold one. Kind of a given when you see that, especially after having 5 mysterious deaths, two from neurological problems and two birds a year and younger due to what looks like heart problems. The one I had die in my arms last month got me to doing research and then finding the grey eye in one of my hens pretty much pointed my nose in a direction I didn't like.

Older hens should not get Mareks. I have seen some stuff about problems being caused by mixing vaccinated with not vaccinated though. This can cause a bad strain of Mareks to develop.

Here in California, we can take live birds in for necropsy so we do not have to wait until one dies.

Unfortunately none of my birds are vaccinated. I opted to buy my flock from an NPIP breeder who breeds for resistance. The hen with the grey eye is just over a year old. She was at POL late in the year. I think she was from my Feb. hatch. All of my deaths are birds 14 months old or younger. The youngest was 7 months. All weird neuro/cardiac stuff that had me puzzled till I saw the grey eye on the 12 month old hen.

I just looked up necropsy services in MO. Mizzou does them at the vet college in Columbia which is driveable for us but unfortunately they want 122 dollars for a full necropsy. I'm better off just saying yeah, that's what it looks like and dealing with it as such.

Start a go fundme campaign!

HA! If I start a GoFundMe campaign it'll be for something REALLY important.......like my chocolate obsession. LOL. No, seriously. If I can find someplace that will do them for under that I'll go for it. I'm going to look around some more and see if I can find anything through the MO. Dept of Ag site.

There is a diagnostic lab in either Springfield or in Jefferson City where the Ag department sends their pathology. The cost is better at first glance 32.00 for gross pathology and 55.00 for pathology with histology. That doesn't sound bad till you read the small print where they talk about extra charges if they have to farm out a lab test or tests but don't tell you what the fees are.

Think I'll talk to the vet. I know he does necropsys on mammals. He doesn't treat chickens but maybe I can talk him into hacking one up for me....
