The Old Folks Home

What's everyone's weekend plans?

Today I've got a gravestone cleaning workshop, and I'm hoping to get done in time to get home and put my plants in the garden (finally).
Tomorrow should be Rooster Camp.

Have a wonderful day. I know you have been waiting to get your plants in the ground.
Did you have plants started or are you buying starts?
What are you growing this year?

Girls we can go out and eat - as soon as we get someone to pay for it all. and figure out how to get us to a restaurant close enough for all of us.

BTW Baskin Robbins makes a fantastic flavor called Mocha Almond Fudge, seriously it's to die for.

Ooooohhh I would love to try the Mocha Almond Fudge!!! :drool

I start all my seeds...
peppers, tomatoes of all types, cukes, squash, pumpkins, winter squash, a couple varieties of melons (gave up on watermelon this year).
I also have broccoli and cabbage and peas and beans already in the ground as well as my onions and garlic.

Weekend plans.....more wood. I am sick of wood at this point and just want to be done with it. I figure we have about two or three more cords to do before we can call it quits.

Got another inch of rain overnight. The chickens are asking for little row boats and muck boots at this point.

I do agree with the electric fence. We have it all around the run at varying heights from 4 inches from the ground to around 10 inches. No matter what tries to go under or gets nosey gets zapped. I've hit it myself a few time. Funniest was when I was moving a hen into the run, had her in one arm, a pet carrier in the other, stepped over the hot wire, misjudged and hit it with my foot. The jolt went up, caused me to drop the pet carrier, hit the hen and caused her to jump out of my arms about three feet in the air, and caused me to dance and swear a bit so I know it will stop curious fox or other 4 legged intruders. Each of our dogs has encountered it at one time or another and it only takes one zap for them to think that those chickens must be packing ARs and they want nothing to do with them.

Hot wires are mandatory coop equipment, IMHO.

Pics!
Top pic is all the keets. I was moving everybody around last night.

Bottom pic is of the youngest hatched. The 4 smallest at the right are the new keets. The other 2 are mid sized so I put them with the smalls. I just learned that it's much easier to amalgamate keets than chicks. The larger older keets don't pick on or make strange at new keets at all. Nice! Introduction is as simple as putting them together. My only concern is that the young keets get ran over. I separated the 6 smallest...and I've heard about it last night for the 4 hours! :barnie byc cant hear.gif

I've never had a keet like the top left, 2nd keet. It's got the same markings and white wings like the royal purple (the dark one) but it's that light color. I'm curious to see what it turns out like. I haven't looked it's color scheme up yet.

I moved the chicks to the Ms. Barred Rock's kennel last night in the progression of getting them ready to move out to the coop as soon as we get it cleaned. I kept her in the open wire garbage container (I had chickens in mind when I purchased it)

I let her with the chicks today and aside from a few small skirmishes...they're good. If I can go from the color of my EE chicks...I'm guessing the chick sitting on feeder will be one of my new roosters. Time will tell. I thought Barred Rocks were aggressive, almost nasty birds. I was expecting WW3. She's been a total sweetheart from day 1, just like Mr. Shuster. Hopefully their chicks will be as sweet tempered. This was a few moments ago. Now they're all sleeping...awwww. :love
