The Old Folks Home

It may surprise you. Mix a tiny pinch of sugar into the dog food, for it's next hourly feeding. That may help strengthen it.

Bluebirds are favorites here in MO. Not the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree but beautiful. We occasionally find one that has committed suicide by flying down our chimney.

It seems like I am seeing more birds than usual at my feeders and nesting boxes this year. I think my favorites are the indigo buntings and the redheaded woodpecker. The latter takes a single sunflower seed, puts it in a small hole in my platform feeder and uses it as a vice to hold the seed while it drills it open.

But speaking of truly stupid birds, my speckled Sussex hen put a toe nail through one of her eggs so she is down to 5. She is a first time buyer though so slipups are forgiven. On the other end of the scale, one of my two OEGB hens that is laying has found a way into my Broody Welsummer hens pen and gifted her 2 eggs which of course aren't going to hatch with the 3 that are left of her 6 that she started with. I thought that little hussy looked overly pleased with herself lately. Since Speckles eggs are behind Dolly's, she will get whatever doesn't hatch of Dolly's and then I'll finish the late Hatcher's in the incubator and hope for he best.

My poor dear husband just sighed and said "that brooders going to be in my hobby room all summer, isn't it?"
