The Old Folks Home

scg, sorry about your Yosemite souvenir. I hope it heals, otherwise, don't put off the surgery too long.

micro, you are a trooper! While there is no cure for Mareks, I am in great hopes that the resulting chicks, will have a strong immunity to the strain that has plagued your flock.

I can't say that it intimidates me but it does embarrass me. But I don't mind congratulating her on her knowledge and learn from it

I learned long ago that no one person, knows everything. While that seems an obvious statement, and it should be, but in reality, it's not. I had to learn, not only to acknowledge my limitations, but to acknowledge them without being ashamed, embarrassed, or feeling like I was somehow less, because I was lacking in some areas. That is not such a simple thing.

@chickisoup, I am so sorry for your loss. What a heart break for your husband, and for you also. May you both find peace in the memories of a life time that was lived well and in the knowledge that he is at peace.

Ronott1, no, I never went the necropsy route. It suddenly dawned on me that I had my own specialist sitting next to me on the sofa. My husband is a retired eye doctor. I asked him to use his portable hand held slit lamp on the eyes of the birds that are showing signs of ocular Marek's and give me his professional opinion. He was glad to and after scoping two birds he just shook his head and said one word "herpes" which confirmed my worst suspicions. He's seen so many human eyes with ocular herpes that he didn't have to go any further.

No, I don't feed fermented feed to my birds. I tried it once and they turned their little beaks up at it. I even tried sprinkling BOS on it to no avail. They eat MFA Game Bird Finisher with a few days of Vitamin/probiotic rooster booster in their water a week and as much healthy treats as they want. I make sure there is food in front of them at all times and even offer feed by hand to birds who are occupying the roost bars. I'm worming more frequently and rotating wormers and trying to control the breeding stress as much as possible.

I can't beat it but I sure as heck can try to hold it at bay as much as possible.

Big Old Bird from southland organics is a great immune booster. It goes into their water for two days every two weeks. Give it a try to see if you can save more with it.

Thanks for passing that on. I looked it up on line. I'll probably get it once I'm out of rooster booster. Which will probably be after my next round of safeguard.
