The Old Folks Home

I am just starting to get tomatoes (cherry only) ripening. I had a ton of cukes, then all of a sudden the squash bugs exploded the week I did the cemetery work and didn't have time to bug and egg pick, and I lost most of the plants.
Then a deer came and ate everything in the front yard garden, pretty much.
It seems to be a losing battle here too. But with the hot wire in place i have hope.

I thought it was birds & bugs eating mine, but saw a big, fat rat out there the other night balanced in the top of a tomato plant chowing down on huge, almost ripe tomato.
:barnie:sick
Yrs ago I thought I had mice or rats eating ours, everytime one would be about ripe it'd be half ate next morn. Happened to be out just before the sun came up one morn and shined a flashlight on them, was slugs! Never thought they could eat that much in one night and leave what looked like teeth marks. I had to pick them just before they were ripe and finish them on the window sills, the slugs weren't bothering the unripe one's.

Lost my cukes I planted in barrels early. Did get quite a few cukes for fresh eating but then all the sudden died, not sure why, would cucumber beatles do that? I did see some but didn't think it was a big deal.
I did start after ripping up our peas about another 30' row of cukes but they are not even flowing yet. Hope they hurry up, I made gallons of pickles last yr and want to again this yr.
