The Old Folks Home

The weird thing that I've noticed here is that we are in the spring migratory paths but not so much for the fall migration. We get the occasional wood duck, teal or blue heron stopping over in our pond for a rest overnight but no big populations overnighting in our fields. There are several very large recreation areas sporting huge lakes that draw in the water fowl.

My favorites to watch fly over are the snow geese and the occasional group of swans....as long as they keep flying over. Thankfully our dogs are good at patrolling the ponds with me and keeping the water fowl moving along.

As for sexing BOs, they can be tricky. I've had birds I was sure were pullets be roos and roos that I was sure were pullets. I've had roos feather out twice as fast as the pullets and pullets with thick legs and vice versa. I usually go by the combs and wattles. My BO cockerels will develop those unmistakenable red knobby combs and promenent wattles when they are 4-5 weeks old. My Buffs love to make me look like a fool though and some keep me guessing till they either crow or lay.

the other day. I went out last night to do late feeding and watering and found one of my Buff O/Welly cross girls with occular Marek's has a really bad flare going on her her affected eye. Instead of that odd green/grey color they get with pin point pupil, her eye is bright blue. The whole eye. It's swollen and causing her discomfort. Sigh, one of my favorite hens also. Very sweet and gentle natured, always wanting to be picked up and will 'hug' you by pressing her body against yours when you do. DH gave me some anti viral salve to put in her eye and I gave her a baby aspirin. Not much else I can do except wait and see what happens.

:hugs so sorry! Nice tgat your treatment is make ng her feel better.

It is true that it is usually our favorites that we loose. My goshawk loss, oddly enough was a cockerel... yeah... a cockerel! I would have liked to have kept him a bit longer to see his form since one of those cockerels gets to live and breed...

But still... an extra cockerel. :hu

Only 3 hours of sleep last night so feeling out of sorts today.
My grandson went in CCU Friday night he had a heart attack. He's only 24.
He has a bacterial infection around his heart and they have done all kinds of tests. His pulse rate wAs only 56 and they are releasing him today.
I'm a bit worried. As he lives alone.

Frightening! :hugs

I am the same with my white leghorns! The problem is that the girls pink up and grow their combs so early I always think they look male. I need giant saddle feathers to know for sure.

Oh.. I have decided that the predator must be a goshawk.

I'm so sorry for James he's also very young.
He's very lucky to have you.
Thank you.

@chickadoodles, considered yourself hugged :hugs and prayers sent for your grandson's speedy recovery.

I had endocarditis when I was diagnosed with rheumatic fever at the age of 23. Very painful stuff. One moment I was standing in the nurses lounge enjoying a cup of coffee and the next instant the chest pain had me sitting in a chair. To my knowledge no MI just inflammation but yes, it can happen. I knew a woman who had a stroke when she was in her late 20s. Such things have no age limit unfortunately.

Do they know what caused the MI? Has he had dental work or been ill lately?

Best wishes and a speedy recovery to any one suffering.
I just went up to the coop and threw in an ear of corn. The guineas and chickens have no idea what to do with it. Here they are staring at it and trying to make sense of what it is: 20170919_150906.jpg

Micro he has not been sick.
My grand-daughter picked him up from the hospital and took him home with her for a few days. The Dr told her he also has pericarditis. They are not sure if it's a virus or not but they are thinking it may be genetic. And it could be. I was born with heart problems and my brother was born with congestive heart failure. And 3 of my 4 grandparents had heart problems so did my mom. So it could be. They want him. Back in a few days for more tests.
