The Old Folks Home

Grits! :drool I LOVE grits.

What we have is an over abundance of acorns. I mean TONS of them. So many that the ground is covered with them and you have to walk on them to get anywhere. The funny thing is that the deer aren't decimating them the way they usually do this time of the year. The bucks are generally pigging out on them but maybe there are just too many acorns and he deer population is down.

Native Americans made flour out of Acorns but they have to be treated to take the tanins out I belive.... Yep....

Well, I had an interesting day today... Found a pigeon with a hurt, probably broken, wing... he's now pigging out on bird seed in a cage...

Got in a fight with a dinner plate sized prehistoric animal with a bad attitude ( snapping turtle)

And, I have bread that I am working on right now... it's not flopping, so maybe this won't be a brick...

I managed to get the inside of the main coop finished. Last winter I had problems with vermin chewing through the wall. A friend gave us a pile of used corrugated metal that I put half way up two was that were not already fully paneled in metal. I then had an open place under the main nesting boxes that I enclosed, sawed out a hole and converted into a nesting box for them The girls are using it anyway as a nesting area. This way I don't have to crawl under the main boxes in order to gather eggs.

From there I hung a tarp over the small coop so the standards have some shelter from the weather besides the coop itself.

I'm pooped.

About 35 years or more ago I remember being out riding my horse when we stumbled upon a wounded pigeon. I was able to catch her and discovered that she had shotgun shot wounds to one wing and a carrier pigeon band on her with a phone number to call in the event she was found. We called the number and the gentleman picked her up that day, thrilled to have her back alive, if wounded. He belonged to a carrier pigeon club in Peoria and had just launched the bird that morning. Never did find out where she was heading when somebody shot her out of the air. I've always liked pigeons for some reason.

Yeah, whenever I freeze beets I make sure to wear thick rubber gloves and still manage to get red freckles all over me.

I'd read that you have to leach acorns at least three times to get rid of the tannin in them. If it isn't necessary with white oak acorns that would be a real treat! Not for me though. Sniff. I'm allergic to tree nuts.:hitMicrochick loves nuts!:hitI discovered the allergy after eating a huge basket of pistachios...and paid for my folly for days afterwards. Not a good memory.

I have rolls in the oven and stew in the instant pot!

Good job on the coop!
I processed the last three cockerels today and did some sweeping in the house. It was a busy day off!

I did nothing today except check on the animals and chase the guineas back into their coop.
Pretty sure i have an inner ear infection, depite being almost done with my antibiotics and i am coming down with a cold i think. I slept in and took a nap. We had bacon, scrambled eggs, and toast for supper. It was great! It was a grey day, we did get a bit of rain. The water catchment system caught me half a storage bin of water. Not bad since we really did not have heavy rain.

Any ear infection is bad. I have been having chronic middle ear infections for 2 years. Antibiotics seem to have little effect on it. I had 2 different ones plus steroids this time and the infection just moved in deeper. I am calling the specialist tomorrow. I am supposed to get a CT scan but they never called to set it up.
I just have no energy at all. Thanks for your good wishes.
