It is a real problem!@penny1960, generally I do but I was in a hurry the last time I was there and just grabbed a cart and ran with it. I do carry hand sanitizer in my purse and in our cars tho and use it liberally.....when I remember it.
The big problem with shopping carts is that they are germ breeding beds. I read a report once that said that they found a staggering amount of germs on the handles, infant seats and in the cart itself. Everything from EColi down the line to some really really nasty bugs.
Generally I do take the time to grab a handful of wipes and wipe a cart down but this time my bad. I didn't.
The sad thing is that people bring their sick little ones to go grocery shopping. The kiddies grab stuff, mom takes it away from them, sets it back on the shelf, some unsuspecting soul like me comes along and even though the cart is sanitized I pick up the item, put it in my cart and go about my business. Two days later, I'm sick. Sigh.Germs are just everywhere and viruses fill the air. Sometimes you just cannot avoid it.
We both caught H1N1 while at work, the customer looked at us and confessed they were getting a cold but came out anyway as they were trying to get things done before going on vacation. 48 hours later, DH was deathly ill and 24 hours after that so was I. We missed over a week of work and were probably sick enough to go to the hospital but didn't. Later we saw the person and asked them how their vacation was. They said terrible, they were sick the whole time.
Some people have a tendency to just not consider the possible outcome of going out sick. They will go to church, go shopping,go out to eat all the while spreading whatever they have all over the place. DH and I have weakened immune systems and take care to stay away from kids and crowds during the winter. We buy as much on line as we can but eventually ya just gotta go into town.
The drill since I was growing up was to wash hands as soon as we were back from the store. Mom would bleach the glasses anytime someone was sick too.
