The Old Folks Home

I am setup to retire here in Southern California... I will be doing it on Social security....

Provded we dont burn down...

There are parts of the county and all of the counties in California that people like us would love... cost of living can be relative... especially if you are into keeping up with the Joneses.

Right now the median price for a home is about 500,000. Yet I know where you can buy land and a home for under 300....

deb

Deb are the fires close to you?

I left Calif. 30+ years ago. I wanted a safer place to raise my kids.

Why were you in winter harbor
My Dad was stationed at the Navy base close by there. I dealt with enough snow there in those 2yrs to last a Lifetime. The townhouse we were moving to wasn't ready when we got there and we stayed in a fishing cabin with a wood stove and an outhouse right on they bay....the dang marker bouy "Ding-Dinged" all night long....:lau.....I was going into the 1st grade and left when I was going to the 3rd....we went there from Hawaii in August and it was like 70° and Mom had to go to Bangor to buy us some sweaters....the locals asked us if we wanted to go swimming.....we gave them a firm No.....:)

That is a shame about your ring.

I mailed my ring to a jeweler in southern MO to have the diamond reset and the ring repaired. He told us to just send it regular priority mail, do not insure it. I think it went to a PO box. No problems. He said that jewelers mailed jewelry every day making the box and contents looking as innocuous as possible and never had any problems.

Of course, 5 years later the diamond is now missing and somewhere in the dirt here on the farm.:hit It broke again. Karma was bad with that ring. I still jump and dive into the gravel on the driveway whenever the sun catches a glimmer of quartz just right.

The insurance on our property did not cover the loss. You have to have special insurance for it, and even if your house catches on fire, they will only reimburse you X number of dollars for anything like cash you keep on hand, jewelry and guns. It's a bite, trust me. If you have 50,000 dollars in jewelry, they will only reimburse you say 5,000 if that is what the ceiling is on your policy. You are just SOL for the rest unless you have it separately insured.

My new EE roo is turning out quite handsome. He also seems to have inherited his father’s (Lemondrop)sweet nature. I named him Lemoncello.

Yes, the winters in Maine can be harsh, but I must say from my many years there that the scenery can be incredibly beautiful. Especially along that rocky coast with the waves crashing... I really did love it there. SCG, since you're already there, you might as well just retire there... Unless of course you'd prefer heat (ya right!) and sweat (LOL!) and all the other things that go with those things.

It's a lot colder and more hostile way up north in Maine than down south. Hard to say a state's climate is perfect when it can vary so much depending where you are in the state. Especially the large states like CA, TX, AK, etc. Living in the Sierra Nevada Mnts or the Mojave desert would be quite a bit different than living in San Diego... or San Fran. But the weather is "perfect" in CA...
