The Old Folks Home

finally got back from the visit with the Oncologist.... two and a half hours....:th

UC San Diego Hospital.... Is a teaching hospital... My doc is the director of the department... He had an intern in tow.

Surgery will be done by robot.... Because of my weight they wont do a standard incision because of the risk of infection. I have had edema in my lower leggs now for a couple of years. Because of that he wont be taking the lymph nodes. He said if he removes them my legs will just get worse.

Blood pressure was really bad this time... so he wants me to get some more tests before he operates.... CT scan to get a really good look at my abdominal area... Then I have to get approval from a Cardiologist for surgery.

VEry very nice man.... Very very nice intern too...

Things are looking up!

I hope you get your surgery soon

Long day here today also but not nearly on the scale of @perchie.girl's. DH had his second skin cancer treatment. 2 down 1 more to go next month.

Deb, It sounds as though you have a good health care team working on your side. I'm so glad. It feels as though you are in good hands that are getting all their ducks in a row before they do your surgery. That should be very reassuring for you. Hang in there. :hugs
Is the treatment a photo exposure?

It's a PDT treatment using fluorescent light. Aminolevulinic acid in gel form is applied to his skin, then he waits for an hour while the gel is absorbed into the cells of his skin but it absorbs more into the precancerous cells and exposure to the light then causes the cells to rupture. The end result is a painful sunburn like redness that dries and peels. This is his second treatment to his face but there are already signs that it is working well for him so we are keeping our fingers crossed for long term improvement.

It's kind of weird funny sitting in the surgical waiting room with everyone and the patients comparing their battle scars to skin cancer and who had the biggest MOHS scar. The guy who had a spot removed from his kidney that another doctor found while xraying for another problem won the prize tho. He even showed us his huge scar.

It is great that he is responding. There seem to be more treatments for skin cancer. Jimmy Carter had it move to his brain and they were able to get it with a drug combo.

Let's hope for a cure!
