The Old Folks Home

That's not ear worms (a moth), that's root worms (a beetle), and it's a different protein with a different mode of action (apparently there have been several "refinements" made to the Bt corn). But yeah, if there is only one kind of food available, the only survivors of a population will be the ones that can tolerate that kind of food. Plants and animals have been in this sort of "arms race" since the beginning of time; we humans have got to stop thinking in terms of a single, "magic bullet." You can't just keep planting the exact same thing in the exact same place year after year and expect that the bugs won't adapt.

Penny how do you find shoes to fit webbed feet

By looking on the Web, of course:

We only get on rooster through the winter that had a large comb and wattles. When it was going down to freeze we put Vaseline on his comb and wattles. He got frost bite once and that was before we started using Vaseline.

We don't eat much corn here any more. I just don't want to eat it knowing all the chemicles they use on it.

Used to fish for smelts in the Adroscoggin & Kennebeck Rivers, upstream, when they'd ice over. Those little fishes were delicious. head off, thumb swipe down the spine to remove guts and blood pocket. seasoned flour and flash fry. Been a lot of years...

Yup I'm right near the Kennebec. Smelting is a 24/7 business. You can rent a shack for a 4 hour time period any time of day. I've never actually caught one, mind you, but the act is fun.

Oh good grief!!!!! That is nothing!!!

I am starting to think that those NN are super magic chickens!

They are.

And beautiful photos, Al.

-22°F this morning.

Going to slowly warm up here this coming week they claim a high of 44 Thursday, that's like almost a 60* difference WOW, t-shirt weather! Lol!
Us too! What a surprise since we aren't all that far from each other ;). Supposed to get mid 40's Thursday going into Friday. Looks like we will have a January thaw after all.

Of course it doesn't usually get wicked cold until AFTER the thaw, then we pay big time. I hope Mother Nature decides that she's given it to us early this winter and the 4 weeks after this won't be worse than we've seen so far.

My dad always swears by the 'old timers' sayings and a January thaw was one of them. Said we always get a January thaw even if it's in February Lol!
Yeah hopefully we don't pay too hard for the warm up.
