The Old Folks Home

Today was the feast day of Theophany (baptism of Christ). After the church service we go down to the beach and bless the bay. It was a BEAUTIFUL day today! Son #3 got to jump in the water to retrieve the cross that was thrown in. Not the potion of the sun in some of the scenery photos, it was about 12:30.

Yep, in Alaska the sun both rises and sets in the south. (I am at latitude 59)

Beautiful pics Alaskan! I guess I missed them. Sorry

Yup I'm right near the Kennebec. Smelting is a 24/7 business. You can rent a shack for a 4 hour time period any time of day. I've never actually caught one, mind you, but the act is fun.

You really should try it SCG. It's pretty warm inside the shacks, so it's like you're not really even ice fishing ;) I'm sure the shacks rent with all required equipment provided; rods, reels, christmas tree jig-rig, but you may/may not need/use bait. You should ask. Back when I did it, I often did it without the shack as I was poor and couldn't afford the rent...:( Fishing at night is interesting if the ice is clear as the lights inside the shack go down into the water and actually seem to draw the fish in.

Drop the jig line down through the hole, jig it up and down at various depths till you find where the fish are, then catch and put in a bucket. Really, as I recall, they were one of the most "gentle", sweetest tasting fish I've ever eaten. So simple to catch, clean, prepare and cook. Not strong or oily in flavor... And, it was fun and relaxing to just sit there with my thoughts and jig.

Oh, I've been before, I just suck at catching anything. They even provide a stove and wood in each shack, along with bait.

I was sprinkling flea killer stuff around the house today. Hate those things. I figured out the stink bugs are probably coming in on the fire wood every day.
I have seen DIY stink bug traps

We do not have much of a problem with them here

Love the pics, Al. Does the local paper come out, and do a story, along with a pic of the winner? They do that here every year.

We used to contact the paper so that they would know when we were going out, and they would take photos and do a piece..... haven't done that the last few years. Huh... I wonder if I can remember to contact them in time next year. :old

Light freezing rain here today most of the day. Figures that the first day where it breaks 32 degrees it would be just nasty outside. Everything is glazed over and pretty though. I'm just sitting back waiting for my run netting to fail if it gets much more ice on it.

The only thing good is that I got to try out my studded boots again and YAY! They work! No falls, no slips, no slides. :celebrate
