The Old Folks Home

Ok I need your professional opinions.

When you hum the Darth Vader theme song do you:
a. Dum dum dum dum dum dum
b. Doo doo do do de do do de do
c. Dah dah dah dah dah dah

Because @dsqard is wrong
neither....

Dum dum do de dum da De Dum Dum...

Deb, at our age (OK, yours, I'm only 61 (for < 1 more month) :lau) it is WAY too late to be intimidated by someone's past accomplishment. Those the same age as you got that degree when? Right 1977 or so. That was so long ago it means only that they were able to learn and regurgitate the material 40 years ago. Even if they got a PhD it was 36 years ago. So what? :D
sooo right.... In 1977 I was designing elevators learning calcululs because I got bored then got Hired away to do hydraulic test stand for the F-16... while he was tinkiering around with gears and levers...... snort

Lot's of Ph.Ds where I work. There is a lot of brain power here...but it is focused in one area.

Quite a few where I work with engineering degrees in various fields, lot went to college, I barely graduated high school, we all make the same $.
Not that I'm against college, I'm sure it helps greatly if they pursue the field they went for. See so many go, have to pay back loans, and then move back home and work in the same plant they could have to begin with.
Only a few places here that pay decent wages. Where I work health insurance is full family blue cross blue shield at no cost to us (is in a way, part of our pay I guess) $10 co-pay and low deductible. When I first started here there was no co-pay.

My health care is good too. I have to pay 157.00 a month for family coverage and a $20.00 copay for office visits. prescription copays vary from 5 to $40.00

Pays good here, good benefits, and they have a hard time hiring, too many bums out there I guess, and many that can't pass a drug test, they cut your hair here so kinda hard to fool the drug test. I just went through three trainees before one finally stayed. And I have a cake job. If they hire ten half will quit the first week, half that's left will get fired, another one or two will quit or get fired, be lucky if one stays.
Trainee is on his own next week, I'm going back on first shift unloading milk tankers, more work not going to get to sit on my butt but I like bs'ing with the drivers.
Four day work week, Wed-Sat, 6am-4.
I love three days off.
Been a few yrs since I was out there so I asked for retraining/brushup, scheduled me Sun-Wed with the other unloader then I have Thur-Tue off before I start on my shift :celebrate

Because @dsqard is wrong
And apparently so is SCG :D

Damn good healthcare there @Beer can. When I was working at the 3 letter company, we were paying about $8K a year for the family of four. DW pays about the same for USPS BC/BS. Copays $25/$35 for specialist. Drugs anywhere from $5 to $95 (for her Humira). I think the deductible is $750/person (in network, higher and separate for out of network). Still get to pay quite a lot for lab tests and such. DD2's Nov ear surgery cost us about $2,500 out of pocket and the family deductible was already hit beforehand.

Navel gazing?? ;)

Yep.... been around quite a few of them.

Dad didnt go to college either... But when the PHDS got up to explain what was going on with a project.... Calculations and all he sat back with his watch calculator and a note pad and came up with the aqnswer for them in about five minutes...

They kerfuffled and he said "I guarantee this will be within the plus or minus two percent error range you require" they finished the calcualtions out to ten decimal places.... He was right.

He was asked how did you do that. He showed them the thumbnail calculations he was customed to using.... Approximations for the actual but spot on for the Practical.

They and people like them need people like Dad and I to think outside the box... to go on instinct and explain why afterwards.... They dont teach lateral thinking in school. I inhereted my dads thirst for knowledge..... ALL KINDS of knowledge.

Ask me about medications, or robotic surgery , or how a hospital works.... it might be a tight focus but I know more than a couple of volumes of books worth.... or at least a good pamphlet....
