I had one little nova spy apple tree get girdled by a rodent one winter. Tried to graft the whole thing back to the rootstock but just couldn't get it, no help, plus it was down low. I never grafted before and watched a guy on YouTube do it just by cutting v-notches matching up bark, and wrapping tightly with strips of garbage bag.I wrapped the apple tree cutting that had damage with grafting tape.
They are all budding out. So far so good.

I ended up getting four branches from that tree grafted to a crappy wild crab apple at the end of our driveway. Lasted two yrs then that winter a deer ate them, just the one's I grafted didn't touch the rest of the tree...
