The Old Folks Home

There are a couple of brands that grandma likes... and they have an impressive shelf life. The ones that I liked have changed taste as well. I am changing my diet any way going off of Bread all to gether... But If you go to Whole foods or a Regular healthfood grocery You wont recognize the makeries on the bread packages... I bet the bread is fresher and has a shorter Use by date....

For what its worth Learn how to read the codes on food packages.... The use by date will be stamped on the wrapper... Technically they have to dispose or remove it from the shelves by that time. In the best interests for "Our health" Ronott has the idea. make your own... Those bread makers are awesome. I dont bake but I had a girlfriend that had one... You just put in your ingredients according to the directions and they do ALL the work.

Thanks Deb. We don't have any whole foods or health store around. But I do have a bread machine. This weekend I will pick up the ing. to start making our own bread.

Good luck at the dr. And have a safe trip.

Thank you everyone for your condolences. I was told to wait only 24 hours, instead of 48 to get the eggs in the bator, so later today they are going in. I'll keep you posted.

I noticed the non-moldy bread for quite some time now. Not only doesn't it mold when it should, but if it's old, there is a fermented/alcohol type smell to it. I won't eat it when it smells like that.

We get what is called a Florida Banana Spider. They're very big, but harmless. I think they're pretty, but don't want to handle one, or have it crawling on me. The leg span is about 5 inches, so they're not small.

Here when horse back riding in the areas where there is grass.... wild oats,etc...... If you stop and un-focus your eyes you can see a black dot for every twenty square feet... Tarantulas... each one sayin.... "Hey baby come to my pad...." LOL.

We only have Black Widows and If you leave your shoes outside give em a whack before putting them on.... They go for the shade....

Then there are the Wind Scorpion or Camel spiders.... Crazy Ugly... I was about twenty one or two and I was working in a machine ship running the reamer on some hinge nodes... lunch bell and I tossed my gloves on the chair... I was the only female working there and much a curiosity to all.

I came back to work Put my gloves on and didn't notice that every one was watching me... I felt a chip in the glove and pulled my hand out to toss it and found one of these chewing on my finger tip.

They have four opposing jaws which were firmly attached to my finger and giving it a good chew. I flicked my hand to get it off... then hunkered down to see what it was...

I guess the guys were surprised I didn't go running screaming and going hysterical.... they didn't know me too well LOL ... I had lots of experience catching odd critters and giving them a look see... even keeping them for a time before turning them back loose. Afterwards I checked my gloves and gave a good inspection before putting them on.

Yep indigenous... and Not related to scorpions... or spiders. non venomous. They are in a family of their own.

Jaws to chew food

Its ugly Yes but has a place in ecology.

Now that's creepier.

My BA eggs have arrived. 1 broke, but the rest are good. I spritzed them good with oxine water, and gently patted dry to help protect against bacteria from the egg white that got on them. I'll let them sit for 48 hours, then put them in the bator. I NEED an outstanding rooster, so I'm praying for some excellent cockerels.
Best wish for pullets, then u are bound to get lots of cockerels!:gig

I like that that spider!

Don't wait at all to put them into the incubator. Don't turn them for a couple of days in the incubator.

People get very confused about this. It is not the incubation part that helps it is the not turning for 2 to 3 days. Of course I have been told that this will kill the chicks but that is a fantasy and not based on poultry science.

In adequate turning is associated with embryo death at about day 10. Any thing else is not from inadequate turning.

There is a time delay for incubating eggs. The longer they go in storage, the less likely they are to hatch. Adding shipping stress compounds this

Found one of my younger hens dead in the coop today. Ascites (aka Water Belly). She was running around just fine yesterday. I thought when they got it, they tend to get a bit lethargic, lay around, or be less active, and have possible respiratory issues. She didn't. She was out running around just like the other one. I'm positive of my diagnosis. I double checked all the others just to make sure there isn't something else going on too. Nope, they're all fine. Even the old gals are spunky, laying, and doing fine.
Sorry Clue, not fun. Had she been drinking too much?
