I didn't know they were German

they are International but started in Germany:

In 1954, they opened their first self-service store in Essen-Schonnebeck, a first in Germany. In 1962, “Albrecht Discount” was shortened to “ALDI,” and by 1968 there were more than 200 ALDI South locations.

I think the European Aldi's are big like department stores and sell much more than groceries.

I checked their store finder. They have stores in Texas and then jump to Southern California. They move up to Bakersfield...which is still over 300 miles from here. Too far for Groceries!
