The Old Folks Home

scg, Congratulations to TFH getting her chick back. She's out of nest box too. You should have given her chicks to raise long ago. She's been missing her calling in life.

I gave her two last year and she never stopped sitting. I had to move them over to my olandsk dwarf, Miss Super Broody.

She's sleeping outside again tonight.

SCG, :fl you find just the right machine for just the right price and don't have to take a 2nd mortgage on the house to have it! I mean, how does one make a purchase like that anyway? Most can't just write a check for it, or carry that much cash to the sew shop... In house financing then paid off early? Credit card? Kinda seems like buying a new car to me...

Anyone growing big pumpkins this year? I might have the biggest one or second biggest one ever. Hoping it is over 40lbs
Nope, just Lady Godiva with the hull-less seeds. Tried another hull-less seeded one last yr, whole packet of seeds and none germinated. This yr with those only have one plant out of the whole packet of seeds, have five pumpkins growing on it though about the size of soccer balls. I've never had good luck with any of the giant pumpkins , even Big Moon, just never look right sickly things and never big. I've always had better luck with regular field jack o lantern type pumpkins like Howden etc I've had some of them the size of beach balls.
I've been wanting to get a hold of my cousin, he's been growing those ginourmos 500+ lb pumpkins for yrs now I see on FB. His kids win competitions here every yr, see how he does it and get some of his seeds. I'll send you some of his seeds which I imagine are acclimated more for our short growing season here might do good in Maine, a long with those giant Sakurajima radish seeds. They didn't develop radishes, too hot this summer I think. From what I read they need cooler temps, might do better up there. Big plants/leaves, but went to seed. Next yr I'm going to plant them earlier, and some towards fall. I planted them in rich soil also, where I had a coop last yr. Read that they do best in poorer soil, lower nitrogen, after I planted them in chicken deep litter... I was hoping for pumpkin size daikons, will have tons of seeds though lol.
