The Old Folks Home

Robins? Are they not common in Cali?
I have a dozen nests in the far side of my garage where they can get in, (dang looking for the pic I had, must've been on my old phone, all the nests and a bunch of little one's with their beaks open waiting to be fed lol )
Had a family of them in our grape vines also. We know it is spring when we see them, even if we get another big snowstorm , poor robins came up too early...lol. They mostly eat worms, can't get many worms with snow on the ground ..
I have never seen a Robin Or a Blue Jay or a Cardinal.

Now that I look them up I have seen Robins...
I have seen Scrub Jays...
No Cardinals....

We see scrub jays and robins here in the valley. In the Mt.s I have seen blue jays and cardinals.

We also have some very pretty red headed wood peckers here.

Thankful to have humidity again. Got a nosebleed every single day there.

Miss Piggy does Druid Arch, at Needles, Canyonland National Park. Getting to it was hairy at times.

False Kiva, Canyonlands NP. It was closed because people are destroying it. Still great to see though, from this distance. Getting to it was hairy at times.

House on Fire, Bears Ears. Really really neat to see. Not closed yet but people are destroying it, so I'd guess it will be closed soon. Not sure why people can't be respectful, but this is why we can't have nice things.

Morning old folks!

@beercan I wear NB shoes also. The podiatrist I was going to at the time recommended them to me as in his opinion they were one of the best supportive tennis shoes on the market. The first few pairs I got were great. Wore like Iron. DH started wearing them also. Then suddenly we started noticing that the soles were starting to peel off after about 6 months worth of wear. Not acceptable wear for shoes that cost 180 $ a pair.

Some time after that started to happen (about 3 pairs later, yeah, we are suckers for punishment) we read where they had shifted their production to China. Coincidence? We speculate that the cheaper manufacturing has really damaged the quality of New Balance shoes. We are probably switching to another brand, Ascics or Sketchers or Reeboks. Not that thrilled with NIKE either as far as longevity is concerned. If I'm going to pay big bucks for good shoes they darn well better last longer than 6 months.

We started noticing the shabby construction almost 5 years ago.

@bruce2000 of course you saw a robin in southern California! Smart bird. Go where it's warm and stay there!

If you have a Kohls near you, watch for their shoe sales. They often have them at half price or less when they do their sales. They make a shoe glue for tennis shoes to repair the separation of the sole from the top. There are a few youtube videos on how to do it. Be careful how much glue you use, so it doesn't seep, and glue more than the place needing the repair.

That's what we did, @getaclue. The local Amish 'hardware' store sells an adhesive called Duraseal. This stuff is tops. If you glue something with it, it stays glued. We use it to glue the soles back on our New Balance sneakers. The only down thing about the glue is that once open unless you freeze it and rethaw it between uses, it hardens in the tube very quickly.

Beautiful morning here in Northeastern Missouri. Temp was in the mid 60s this morning. Scheduled to be hot for the next 4 days then Rain on Wednesday night and Thursday followed by chilly temps, highs in the 60s. Fall is definitely edging out summer.

Not doing much today. No big plans. May just kick back and enjoy summers last hurrah!

SGC your pictures are beautiful. What a wonderful place to vacation. I'm a big rock hound so I would be in hog heaven there.

We have an amazing array of birds here. Everything from tiny hummers and Jenny wrens to bald eagles. I think my favorite time of the year is May/June here when all the song birds are singing their brains out in the early morning. Since there are so many farm ponds and lakes we have a lot of aquatic birds, ducks, heron, egrets etc. Since we are about an hour from the Mississippi River we get eagles moving inland in the winter looking for food and I think I read where there are 4 active eagle nests in our county so some stick around to breed. They don't cause nearly the problems that the hawks cause though as far as chickens are concerned. There are also a large number of vultures to be found.

Hummingbirds are still here, but not as many at the moment as last year. We have goldfinches aplenty flitting about. The mornings are deliciously cooler than daytime temps, so at dawn I open the screened windows and doors to let the fresh air in. This morning I heard the unmistakable sound of a flock of migrating Canadian Geese as I was sipping coffee. Fall is in the air!
