Micro your nuts I use a grab it to take eggs from under a hen .. the little marans from the group I hatched has started pecking at my feet this has gotten nuts I go our there she is going to trip me

micro, maybe she IS going full broody. Your story puts me in the mind of an ornery Chihuahua. They look like they would eat a person up, but are too small to do any real damage. If they were as big as Great Danes, nobody on the planet would be safe.

Wow, I have Black Australorp hens that weigh 6 - 7 lbs., and none of them have ever given me a problem getting the eggs. Of course, they've never gone full broody either.

I have a couple of hens that will grab a bit of skin and twist.

My kids are so well trained though... they always respond with "SUCH a good mama!"

Lol, broody's can be serious. I think of them more like a snapping turtle, slow puffy and bite/mean, snapping turtles. Have a pic here somewhere but hard to find them now after the change in format. Had/have a EE that would hunker down and growl. I had to use big leather gloves and a shield to get the eggs under her and was still scared.
She's our oldest hen now, a long with a polish. I don't keep birds I don't want except for those two ( kids favourites)..........
Haven't been many eggs this winter, had a green/olive one recently, EE has to be about eight yrs old.

It is the terrible 3 I use the grabbit on I have all birds from breeders now so one I made other two no but they are like 4 now they puff and screech the grabit keeps my skin intact

I could use about a foot of sunshine right now! It rained all night here. Everything is just plain sponge soggy. I'll be donning the muck boots this morning when I venture out for sure. I think they are calling for more rain today but so far this is shaping up to be a wet spring for us. Can't complain. We have been plenty dry here for a long time.

I haven't had many problems with any of my broodies. TRex as I have named her is my first really ferocious broody in almost 5 years of keeping chickens. And yeah, the chihuahua resemblance is remarkably right on the spot. I'm just glad that she isn't the size of one of my Welsummer hens because I'd be sporting bruises and skin breaks.

I had a little cochin bantam rooster when I was in my teens. he was just a tiny little guy, cute as cute could be. He had a tiny bantam hen that always seemed to have a line of chicks following her. Big Red would squire them around and if I got too close, he would weeble his way over to me, peck the toe of my sneakers and raise a fuss at me. I'd just bend over, pick him up, look him in the eye, tell him to STOP IT, sit him back down and he would obediently turn and weeble his way back to Maxine and her babies.

I really LOVE the little birds. LOL.

Good Saturday morning, Everybody!

A beautiful sunny day here today in the 60's after 70's and our warmest weather of the year, BUT snow is predicted for tomorrow. Then a bounce back to the 70's by Tuesday. Weather is certainly the gardening wildcard.
Put in some Pak Choy seedlings and we had a couple of warm days and those durn seedlings straight-out bolted! Grrr.... Peas are starting to come up. I may try to put in another row today, but I have tax accountant meeting soon competing with my time. Eggs setting for Easter Hatch-a-long today, also.

If weather is too nasty to be outside tomorrow, I'll work on setting up the growlights and heat pads to get the tomatoes, peppers and eggplants going.

No broodies yet and would like to keep it that way, too. The Marans when on the nest, though, take their sweet time laying and make funny pterodactyl noises when disturbed. Such divas. No flesh-grabbers in my flock...thus far. Yay!

It's really chilly here today, only 37 degrees and I just looked outside to see a fine snow shower coming down. It's like what the.......

Brooder is cleaned and testing the heater now. Fayoumi chicks arrive next week some time via a friend's order with M.McM. hatchery.
