The Old Folks Home

I had to look Chayote up as I had never heard of it before or seen it at the local groceries that sell ethnic foods. I love to try new foods though so if I could find it I'd probably try it. Around here, besides the Amish, there is a large Hispanic population and with ATSU Sills, the School of Osteopathy and a couple more colleges I can't think of right now in Kirksville there is a pretty interesting representation of different cultures to be found when classes are in session so there is a lot of ethnic foods to be found in the local HyVee and Walmart.

Morning everyone. Bright and sunny here today with a fall like high of 63. I'm still doing fall clean up outside. I have the big coop cleaned but need to cover the screened in windows with plastic for winter. I've never had a ventilation problem in that coop as the shed is so old and drafty that it provides its own air circulation. I still have the old 'little coop' to clean out. I want to get it clean, spray it down with strong bleach water and let it set over the winter months to air out and let the cold kill off some of the germs left behind. I hope to use it as a rooster coop come spring but Idunno. The birds that lived there were my 'Marek's' flock with the occasional extra rooster thrown in for good measure. I wonder if I can ever get it reasonably sanitized or if it's a lost cause.

It used to be a 'duplex' but I tore out the lower 'condo' so the upper coop is all that remains and stands on 'stilts' so the door is at shoulder height. it's closed up now but the chooks love to scratch around and hang out under it. They love digging for treasure there.

I need to make a decision soon as November is just around the corner.

Also plan to put more apples in the freezer and distribute the remainder to neighbors and friends.

after I recovered from my trip to Vons I headed to Food for Less. Huge market and caters to our Hispanic community.... I love going down the aisles and try to figure out what is in the packges... There is also an Asian Aisle.... Condoments and I bougt Pho in a broth box.... Want to see if its any good.

Oh and I went down the meat asile.... And what did I find.... Big trays of PIG FEET... Woohoo....:weeI filled my cart up.... They had beef feet as well as Beef Neck bones.... And Pork Butt Roasts Two to the bag for .77 Cents a pound... I couldnt even lift it out of the cooler. Bwahahah.... Apples for 2.99 a bag... And the two kinds I want to use for the Apple butter... Granny smith for tart and natural pectin and Gala for sweet. My recipe calls for them to be unpeeled... Just chopped up last time I made it the peels kind of disappeared.

Bought a bottle of lemon juice and a bottle of lime juice... and Mesquite seasoning.. I had to ask a fellow customer to read me the lable to see if it had sugar in it... Nope and Nope... He was very nice...

Oh and a big restaurant sized container of whole pepper corns. with all this jarring up i want to do I will need it. I got enough piggie feet to can about six quarts of Pickled piggie feet. Enough to last me till I get sick of em. Oh and they are already split and cleaned

Same with the beef feet. The beef neck bones and some of the marrow bones as well as the ox tails and beef feet should make some great bone broth. Sad to say is if I want to can it The canning process breaks the Gelatin chain... So the option is to freeze it.... for drinking that is. Though I will can up enough for stock.

Oh and they had fresh bay leaves.... And a few mexican squashes that look like they would be good I have to find out how to cook them because they were hard as a rock and about the size of a green tennis ball.

The squash name starts with a C...

I am tired pysically. tiredest I have been in a long time.

got to to do some more research

Still without power. Lost a huge pine tree overnight and a few other trees but thankfully none near the house. Drove all over looking at damage. It’s crazy. Especially by the water. Lots of docks damaged. But trees and branches down everywhere.

The street behind us had the top of a maple fall right on the power lines. Tree still blocking the road. Lines still down. Thankfully it’s not the lines that run to our house but still.

We are now attempting to set the generator up as it’s clear it may be out all day.

I’ll post some pictures of the damage later. Uploading pictures on data is very slow, time consuming, and uses a lot of data. So I’m going to wait. I think once we get the generator running, the internet should still be fine as the lines don’t appear to be damaged. We’ll see.

Still very windy here. The warning goes till about 6 I think.

One of the trees that fell was very rotten and filled with carpenter ants and other bugs. Gave the chickens said rotten wood and leaf litter underneath it where they had run to hide (we cut right through the nest). The chickens were in heaven. :lau

I’ll be back later if we can get the internet working but if not I’ll be back tomorrow.

I hope the power is on soon at your place!

Oh my goodness, glad you have a generator!

Me too! It’s not a huge one but should be enough to run the essentials and a few other things.

I hope the power is on soon at your place!

Thanks! Me too!! It went out probably around 2am at the height of the storm we would guess.

I've been eating chayote for years. I use it as a side dish. I simply rinse, cut it in wedges, then put it in boiling water, with a little butter, and a dash of salt, and pepper. Cook until tender when poked with a fork. Just before serving, in the very center, where the seed would be, it looks a bit like a membrane, just cut, or scoop that out, then serve. It's got a mild, wonderful flavor.
Totally read that as coyote. I need a vacation :lau:lau:lau:lau:lau:lau
