The Old Folks Home

You are so lucky to have him with you, Penny. DH have only one another. Another reason we are playing this safe.

I called my doctor yesterday after the pandemic announcement was made and told them I would rather not come in for a pain assessment when I was not suffering from a cold or a flu just to tell him that nothing had changed as far as my use of pain meds was concerned. The nurse called me back today and said that doc agreed with me 100%. No sense risking being exposed. I'm going to call in monthly and give a report on how well my pain is contained.

I told them I worried about her and the doctor. I have been there and done that. Doctors offices, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes are petri dishes. Staff is stressed and overworked. They will be the first to stumble and be infected.

I am using this time to clean and start seeds. Thinking about popping some eggs in the Brinsea and try for some more Fayoumi's. I'd like to wait and start them so they can go out to the brooder room off the shop and bypass the hobby room this time so maybe next week.

Everybody here is sniffling with.... Juniper pollen allergies.

The Governor of NM declared a state of emergency (with our four cases, all recent travelers abroad) and, as a result, ALL gatherings of 100 people or more are cancelled for the next 29 days. So no sporting events (or, more accurately, no audience for sporting events), no conferences, art shows, minglers, theater. Of course, they haven't closed the schools or casinos...yet.

I had to go to Costco today at noon to check on a dog's prescription (another story entirely) and there was NO parking. Managed to snag a spot in the hinterlands and the gal loading her car next to me said she had arrived at 10:00 and the line of cars was out to the street. Yes, there is a panic and folks are stocking up on whatever they can forage. Folks also have a bit of anxiety as I witnessed several incidents of parking lot road rage. Apparently the situation at Wal-Mart is even worse.

Luckily we're set with staples, so just hunkering down as there's no need to go out -- except to get the mail -- until next Wednesday when we see the tax guy. Me thinks this self-imposed exile will result in a rather clean house.

Good news on not having to go into the Dr.!

I might need to see if I can avoid grocery shopping this week!

Thank God for Amazon Prime Pantry is all I can say. UPS rolls up and leaves boxes for us. We spray and wipe everything down, bring it in and put it away. It's a life saver for us.

I started taking stock of things and shopping two months ago. I've been following this since the first of January. Not out of worry so much as out of medical curiosity...then. I did CE before I retired on contagious diseases. MERS and SARS along with EBOLA are just freaking terrifying and slightly fascinating for me from a medical POV.

A family friend in PA just emailed us that the school where his daughter teaches is closing for two weeks and all Ohio schools are closing all K-12. Probably a smart move on their part.

Pizza for dinner tonight.

Mentioned to DH that I wanted to start some eggs in the brinsea but wanted to time it so they could be out in the unheated brooder room. He said good idea, start them the first of April.

I got me a good man!:love

That was before I entered the Mother Earth News contest to win a Brinsea 28 egg, 537 dollar incubator....took some talkin to convince him I wouldn't hatch 28 chicks in it if I won it,LOL!

Some items are filtering back into the stores here, now that the initial rush has passed. I know that some of the problem in a few of the stores here, has nothing do to with actual shortages, but poor management.

When Dh got up, and had a bit of time before having to get ready for work, I mentioned I was going grocery shopping. He pitched a fit. I am NOT to go grocery shopping. I'm to stay at home, and send my daughter. I asked him what the difference would be, whether I go to the store, and get contaminated, or whether my daughter comes home from the store, and contaminates me. We actually do have a makeshift plan, that we have used before, when serious things were going around the jail, and when we were house hunting, and there was a lot of mold, and one of the places we looked at, the person's chickens had Coryza. When he comes home, he undresses in the garage, tossing his clothes in the washer (don't run it yet), then goes straight to take a bath. The towel used to cover himself, then goes into the washer with the other things already in there, and it's all washed immediately. The shoes, which were left in the garage, and the vehicle are then misted with disinfectant. (10% bleach solution works fine). No, it's not total decontamination, but it has worked fine for us, for many years now. My daughter can do that, substituting her bath robe for the towel, if she'd prefer. Yes, I have Oxine, so I can easily mix some in water, and use it in the vaporizers too.

No, that's not overkill, considering my age, and being a cancer survivor, still taking chemo type drugs daily. The day before yesterday, 14% of confirmed active cases, were in critical condition. That has gone down today to 11%, however, the death toll climbed from 6% the day before yesterday, to 7% today, so that may have something to do with the slight decline in critical cases.

As to this being "just the flu", no it's not. It doesn't begin with flu symptoms, but with some flu-like symptoms, but that's just at the start, and the symptoms get significantly worse, even for those that survive it. The news here, interviewed some of the first confirmed survivors of it here, in our county. Their descriptions were enlightening, to say the least.

By the way, I don't know about everywhere else, but here when they say self-quarantine, that does NOT mean they just send you home, and that's the end of it. Far from it.

IF I were younger, healthier, etc. I would not be nearly as concerned. Rightly so. BUT even younger, healthier people should be taking precautions, so as not to spread it to those that may not be able to fight it off as easily.
