@06kids welcome. Chronologically we may be mature, but otherwise we remain young.
When getting sober I asked a friend where my brain was. He said, "It's on a shelf somewhere, and you are 50. By the time you are ready for it you will be dead." I loved that guy.

Whatever... my mind, my mind.... I would track it down and stick back in it's brain case.... but I can't find it.

@CapricornFarm, I am so sorry, my friend. We all have been in your shoes. Last year I had one of my favorite roosters die when he fell into an old cattle mineral container that I was using to collect water for the birds. It wasn't that deep and only about 2/3rds full of water. He could have stood up in it and had his whole neck and head out of the water but there he was floating and quite dead. A very striking rooster and very sweet natured. I am still kicking myself over that one but 'stuff' happens that we have no control over.
One of my favorite quotes is from Ralph Waldo Emerson
āFinish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.ā

Try not to blame yourself, different day and the hawk wouldn't have been there.
Leghorns tend to be flighty, I wouldn't specifically choose them for "works well with children". I've not had RIRs, I do have 2 Barred Rocks. Of course each bird is an individual. I have some that will bolt from the nest if I try to give them BOSS (*), others will not only take it from me but will call to let me know they are in a nest and don't want to miss out on morning treat time. The newest birds (last June) still aren't willing to get food directly from me but many of the older girls will fight for the chance. As an example EEs are supposed to be flighty. I have 5 (in my flock of 23) and 3 are much more willing to be close than the other 2 - the oldest and one of the young ones.
None of mine are "hey I'd like a hug" girls, all come running for food/treats. But then none of mine were raised with a lot of hands on. In fact, other than the original 12 (3 still alive and laying), all were raised in the barn starting a day or two after they arrived in the mail, 3 of the 4 later batches were raised by a broody hen. Those tend to be the least "friendly" though in time they all have come around to a willingness to be near and not run as I walk through. My 2 Exchequer Leghorns stay a good distance at all times.

Heard an interview on "On Point" (WBUR in Boston) today with a doctor from a 3,000+ person town in Italy. They now have zero cases of the Coronavirus. How? They tested EVERYONE when the first case showed symptoms.
The scary part?? FORTY FIVE PERCENT of those infected showed no symptoms at all and were capable of transmitting the virus to others. They isolated everyone that tested positive. They also re-tested everyone after a time and found a small number were infected, they were isolated. Now no cases.
I think the path is clear, I don't know that we in this country are going to take it.
