Naked neck turkens are the best breed out there, super coolbut I don't really 'KNOW' chickens, so I'm not too sure about them.
Any advise for a 'newbie' chicken lady?

Try not to blame yourself, different day and the hawk wouldn't have been there.I feel at fault because I didn't finish the top on the run.
Leghorns tend to be flighty, I wouldn't specifically choose them for "works well with children". I've not had RIRs, I do have 2 Barred Rocks. Of course each bird is an individual. I have some that will bolt from the nest if I try to give them BOSS (*), others will not only take it from me but will call to let me know they are in a nest and don't want to miss out on morning treat time. The newest birds (last June) still aren't willing to get food directly from me but many of the older girls will fight for the chance. As an example EEs are supposed to be flighty. I have 5 (in my flock of 23) and 3 are much more willing to be close than the other 2 - the oldest and one of the young ones.I am looking into White Leghorn, Rhode Island Reds, and Barred Rocks. Locally they have Golden Comets, but I don't really 'KNOW' chickens, so I'm not too sure about them.
