The Old Folks Home

Hmmm..... Try again.

Mine drink from a variety of sources,
As do mine. Dirty water is preferred for some reason.

I had a rat problem, seems to be solved with some Ramik Green (from TSC). Took about 3 nights before the little green balls stopped disappearing. I filled in the tunnel entrances last night, they are still closed today. I have a lot of the Ramik left, don't know how long it stays good.

I've used Ramik. It doesn't degrade too rapidly as I've had boxes of it around for a year without trouble before we had our flock.

I have an old hole that a rat chewed in the wall of the coop last year that was egg sized. I screwed hardware cloth over it after dropping bait in the area between the studs and external wall then recover the hole with the hardware cloth. Yesterday I noticed that the hole was bigger. They are trying to figure out a way clear of the hardware cloth. I just added bait and screwed down a larger piece.

I hate to ruin the hen's fun killing off their toys. They will kill the larger mice and try to figure out a way to swallow them before giving up. The little mice are gourmet fare in my coop. I saw one of my smallest SDW roosters chase down a baby mouse and beat it to death before giving it to one of the hens.

No, she ate the mouse and refused to squat for the little guy...such a tease.

The weird thing is I've seen the hens standing around a mouse that was killed by bait holding my breath that none of them decided that it was a snack. Not one hen touched it.

Do they somehow know it died an unnatural death?

Yeah, they are a lot smarter than our dogs that way.

I'm sitting here watching two hummingbirds fighting over the feeder I put out two days ago for the Orioles. Amazing little birds. I never tire of watching them.
They are my favorites! I hope that doesn't doom them.

Morning everyone.

We have a frost warning for tonight with temps dipping down to 32-34 degrees. Very unusual for this time of the year. Our last frost is usually the end of April so I will be busy covering everything up today then uncovering tomorrow. Needless to say, I'm not happy but the weather is the weather and not much we can do to influence it.
Maybe if we all let out some hot air?
