The Old Folks Home

I am an animal rescuer as well. Um Well they come to me. Fireworks or thunderstorms...

Old dog walking confusedly down the middle of the road. Happily got in my car. His tag had a phone number I called and some grateful people came and got him. It Was a Son and Daughter in law who came. They were baby sitting while their parents went on a two week trip. He had traveled about five miles on foot and was very tired.

Old Red horse I had been watching in a back yard. oN the thin side with a waiding pool for water. As far as I could see he only had grass from the yard and there was a hay pile but not enough evidence of feeding.

He was out along the road Grazing. So I pulled over and grabbed a handfull of mane and guided him back to his Gate which was open. During that time he never pulled away. I skritched him and found he was resonably clean and his coat was shiny. But when I pinched the skin on his neck it pulled up about an inch and gradually smoothed out. Dehydration.

I filled his pool and wrote a note that I left on their front door. Told him he was dehydrated, Recommended a salt lick and two feedings of hay per day besides the grass. The back yard was about 20 by 30 feet. I chained up the gate. and moved on.

The next week I noticed he was gone.

Another was a lovely red mare close to my house walking along a busy highway nibbling on whatevers. I pulled over same as another woman. I tried to lead her by the mane but she was having nothing of it. I went back to the truck and dug out a lead rope and fashioned a quick figure eight halter. Then followed her tracks back. Down the highway about five hundred feet then a turn up a dirt road.

We met the owner half way up to his house. He was so relieved. slipped a halter on her and he followed us up to his house. He took her to her pasture and locked the gate. Thanked me profusely and told me that he was caring for her while his brother was away.

Interesting fellow used to raise buffalo in that pasture. So his fences were shall we say Robust. He had some interesting yard antiques. Mining equipment on rails stuff like that. but the most interesting was about twenty feet of the old wooden highway. Been in his family for some time before the highway became a National Treasure and protected.

The highway was made of wooden planks designed to cross the Sand of the desert. Built in the Model T days. Dunes would cover it now and then and they werent able to use it very long before Highway 80 was built. So now it lies mostly under sand but portions are kept clear for tourists.

My son is the same way. We both rescue and relocate rattle snakes.

Just two days ago my son was on a bike ride and here was a Tortoise trying to cross the road. He was big about a foot and a quarter long and about twenty pounds. Dean would lift him up and put him in the shade while he talked to one of the neighbors. She called another neighbor across the street.

He came out and said No it wasnt his Tortoise. He used to keep one but not for a couple of years. He still had the set up in his back yard so offered to Care for him while he searched for his owners. This was an African Tortoise not a native. This species live to be around seventy years old.

We had two cats dumped here, one died down by the river and one showed up on our porch. Crazy Cat was making weird noises. When hubby went over by the door, cat ran off.
My Grandma had a second hand store in a little town about 7 miles south of Red Bluff. For some reason people in Red Bluff dropped off kittens there each spring. Grandma ran her own little kitten rescue there!

People really do not think sometmes

micro, We even had an elephant show up in the back yard. My dad was talking to a fellow on the phone, and said he had to go, an elephant was in the back yard, about to knock down my mother's tree. He hung up.

A couple weeks later, the guy called, and mom answered the phone. He, being sarcastic, asked her if my dad got the elephant in time to save her tree. She responded with, "yes, he did." The guy was surprised, and exclaimed "you mean, there really was an elephant?" My mother replied, "of course there was an elephant." "Babe escaped, and was scratching herself on my tree." "She's too big, it's too small, and she would have knocked it over." Then she had to explain how we got an elephant in the back yard, and how we knew it's name. We lived next door to a circus winter quarters. We had a fairly large piece of property. Part of it had been cleared for the house, and pond. The rest was untouched. They had a handler, and he would bring them over. The elephants liked to eat the palmettos on the untouched land, then come take a dip in the pond. On training days, they didn't get to come over. Sometimes they would sneak over anyway. Babe was particularly bad about sneaking off.
It is a good thing that the tigers did not roam!

Good thing, if they wanted all you want, there would be no room in the house.
:lau :gig :lau true!!!
You should have entered! Kathy wanted to beat the record of 900 entries.

I only have a couple hundred to go....
I meant to!!! Got some new chicks last month so it would have been perfect but then I completely forgot. :hit

So sorry @bruceha2000 !!! Was she a Black Australorp? She was beautiful! I loved all mine. Still have one.
Yes, BA; I still have 2 others from Meyer (Zorra was from Ideal).
Thanks all for the condolences.

I actually just lost 3 chickens the other day, including one of the Australorps, to what I think was coyotes but maybe fox.
 Really sorry! I've lost hens but never more than one at a time.

Are you sure she REALLY isn't mine and we were just separated at birth?
Well since you never gave birth, I think it must be that @getaclue was a surrogate and "forgot" to send your baby when she was born ;)

The owner came down twice to collect him and the second time said he had had it with the boy and was going to put him down.
Classic. Kill the animal because you can't be bothered to put up a proper enclosure.

but I’m the only real animal obsessed one in the family.
I don't know, seems like your brother is packing in the dogs pretty well :D

You mean they don't have to go out and sweep the whole thing every day?

People really do not think sometimes
Oh they think alright. They think that Grandma was good at taking in dumped kittens, what better place?

My birds are from Meyer as well!! Although I actually have some Ideal birds too now 😂🤣 they’re about a month old.

And thank you!!! I’ve never lost more than one at a time either. It was a bit shocking!!!

And :lau that’s mostly all the wife’s doing. ;) same with all the fosters. He just zips it and goes along with it. :lau :gig :lau

Although he does love them lol
