RIP 1953-2021
I am an animal rescuer as well. Um Well they come to me. Fireworks or thunderstorms...
Old dog walking confusedly down the middle of the road. Happily got in my car. His tag had a phone number I called and some grateful people came and got him. It Was a Son and Daughter in law who came. They were baby sitting while their parents went on a two week trip. He had traveled about five miles on foot and was very tired.
Old Red horse I had been watching in a back yard. oN the thin side with a waiding pool for water. As far as I could see he only had grass from the yard and there was a hay pile but not enough evidence of feeding.
He was out along the road Grazing. So I pulled over and grabbed a handfull of mane and guided him back to his Gate which was open. During that time he never pulled away. I skritched him and found he was resonably clean and his coat was shiny. But when I pinched the skin on his neck it pulled up about an inch and gradually smoothed out. Dehydration.
I filled his pool and wrote a note that I left on their front door. Told him he was dehydrated, Recommended a salt lick and two feedings of hay per day besides the grass. The back yard was about 20 by 30 feet. I chained up the gate. and moved on.
The next week I noticed he was gone.
Another was a lovely red mare close to my house walking along a busy highway nibbling on whatevers. I pulled over same as another woman. I tried to lead her by the mane but she was having nothing of it. I went back to the truck and dug out a lead rope and fashioned a quick figure eight halter. Then followed her tracks back. Down the highway about five hundred feet then a turn up a dirt road.
We met the owner half way up to his house. He was so relieved. slipped a halter on her and he followed us up to his house. He took her to her pasture and locked the gate. Thanked me profusely and told me that he was caring for her while his brother was away.
Interesting fellow used to raise buffalo in that pasture. So his fences were shall we say Robust. He had some interesting yard antiques. Mining equipment on rails stuff like that. but the most interesting was about twenty feet of the old wooden highway. Been in his family for some time before the highway became a National Treasure and protected.
The highway was made of wooden planks designed to cross the Sand of the desert. Built in the Model T days. Dunes would cover it now and then and they werent able to use it very long before Highway 80 was built. So now it lies mostly under sand but portions are kept clear for tourists.
