I have Barred Rocks and Black Australorps and would get them again. Also like my White Rocks though Angel is broody AGAIN! Got some Austra Whites (White Leghorn x Black Australorps) last June and they are SERIOUS layers of L and sometimes XL eggs. Quite an accomplishment for a bird that is more the size and shape of the leghorn than the BA. They aren't particularly flighty. I love my EEs, they have all laid well and none have ever gone broody (in opposition to Meyer's description!). 1/4 of my flock are EEs, the oldest is 8 and still laying L and XL eggs. I have 2 Columbian Wyandottes (1 year old) they are EXCELLENT foragers and lay well but contrary to Meyer's description of M to L eggs, they are S to LOW end M.I have been looking at Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Australorps, and thought about sex links, but I hear so much about health issues with them since they are bred to lay so much.
Not TOO many. But we often have our "D"earsWe do like to talk here and there is not as much acronyms used.

Thank you! I'm not quite sure of breeds yet. I keep deciding on some, then changing my mind, then changing my mind again. At least I have plenty of time to decide. As for numbers, probably six. We live in the suburbs, and even though our city has no limits (just no roosters), I think that number is manageable for us. We want them mainly for eggs. I'm hoping to be able to gift some eggs to our neighbors so they will be happy with the chickens too. Our plans are to get some property in the future, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and start our own little homestead.
How cold is cold?I know each hen will have her own personality/traits, but would like breeds that are less likely to go broody, good layers, not flighty, not too noisy (neighbors). I have been looking at Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Australorps, and thought about sex links, but I hear so much about health issues with them since they are bred to lay so much. I also need to think about our climate here. It can get pretty cold/snowy in the winter and pretty hot in the summer, although we don't have the humidity here that many others do. It got up to 100 degrees here yesterday and has been in the high 90s this past week. I welcome and appreciate any and all suggestions and opinions![]()
I sure am glad you got the colonoscopy!BTW Please folks if you are 50 or thereabouts and your doctor sez you should get a colonoscopy PLEASE DO IT!! I said no and my doctors didn't push the idea. Then lately got a new doctor that wouldn't take NO for an answer. An elaborate test kit arrived and I flunked it, soooooo
I had a colonoscopy today. Wasn't bad at all except for the iv (to put me under). I have very, very small veins and the health workers always make me black & blue trying to dig out a useable one. The nurse today said she would put pressure on it and then it won't bruise. Well it's hours later and I have quite a purple bruise - it is what it is.
The doctor talked to me afterwards and said I had SEVERAL LARGE Polyps - sure I spelled that wrong but just nervous. The bigger they are, the longer they have been around and growing. If I had agreed when I was 50, I probably wouldn't have this dilemma . She said it will be a week or so before she gets results back from the lab.I am not expecting miracles.
My son (34+) won't go to the doctor, afraid of shots- when he was a toddler had several blood draws and not one peep out of him but later afraid of needles even though he let the dentist give him novacaine.
I got over my fear of needles & tests when I was pg with him. I was so excited about having a baby (after 2 miscarriages) I even suggested tests I should have done before delivery. Dr.complied.
If I had my life to live over, there are so many changes (for the good) I would make but, you don't get a second chance. Folks please, please try to make the best decisions the first time around. You may not get a second chance.
It is nice when all the parts arrive!I'm nearly there on my new computer build.
