The Old Folks Home

Morning old folks got up late here 10 am now 11:30 oops second cup.
Same issue here for some kids further south they have no money in family and no internet. Besides the 185.00 the big company charge a month covers their food cost instead.. Schools down there are stepping in

Hot and humid here, but the monsoons bring afternoon relief of temps when the clouds pop up. But those clouds also mean a sudden downdraft. Dogs don't like the weather as we've got two that are thunderphobes. Heck, there was a storm on the TV program and the dog hightailed it into the closet.

My immunity to insect venom is NOT increasing per sting. Just the opposite. (Doc says that sometimes happens.) Huge welts and swelling ensue. Had one go down my shirt (or maybe up as it was a very oversized tee) and it swelled so badly I looked like I had an extra boob. The last go-round hit my rump and, well, it was ugly. Wretched wasps.

However, wasps get a wide berth vs. elimination as they are predators to nasty garden bugs. Thus far they haven't nested where inconvenient. We also welcome toads and lizards. Dogs have learned to give the former a pass and the latter seem to be sporting short tails this summer.

Rabbits not as bad this year as there's a rabbit disease that seems to be keeping the numbers down, that and nearby hawks. My morning chores often get detoured so as not to disturb the raptor's breakfasting. Neighbors say they see coyotes regularly in our orchard. Knock wood, the veggie compound hasn't been ravaged by rodents lately (pack rats and squirrels), although I do see one stray juvenile rabbit in there who hasn't figured out how to escape.

Overnight my dogs half emptied their water pans - it never cooled off.
 mine go through almost their entire gallon and a half bowl in just a day then it gets low but not totally empty and I have to refill it cause they can’t reach it plus I just like them to have fresh water.

Apparently I have "inherited" another effing woodchuck. I was in the workshop in the north end of the barn and heard a lot of rustling in the other end. I opened the door closest to that end and looked over into what was originally the hay mow many many decades ago. Saw something dark scuttle into a woodchuck hole dug several years ago. I went and got the Havahart and got squeak/whistled at from the hole :he

Once caught a wood chuck that completely filled the hav a hart trap. No kidding, front to back, side to side. Thing was a monster and smelled to high heaven. Plus it still managed to lunge at me and growl. I was living in the city at the time and it had burrowed under the garage. I called the city and they said to tie a rope to the trap and throw it into the river to drown. I was appalled PLUS it was a 20 pound wood chuck. No way I could do that.

I finally wound up wrestling the cage into the car and took it for a drive to the country where there were lots of woods...what better place for a 20 pound wood chuck?

You all on the west coast are getting the weather we had late last week and over the weekend.

My birthday was Saturday. DH asked me at the end of the day if I had a nice day and I said....Hot....always hot on July 18th. Ask me how my birthday was 10 years ago and I'd say HOT. 25 years ago....HOT. You get the idea.

Bit cooler here today. Low 80s but humid with rain off and on.
