The Old Folks Home

Happy New Years @lovesfarms!

I have more of a hate hate relationship with winter. I don't mind the snow but the bitter cold and ice get real old really fast. Plus my chickens are little snowflakes who won't go out in the snow. I have seen the ones where this is their first winter go flying out of the pop door. Suddenly see the snow, let out a scream of alarm and circle mid air to land back on the ramp or the opening. They look at the snow but it may as well be a run full of predators to them. No way they are going out.

Me, I don't mind the snow. It's much preferable to maneuver in than the ice is. Took a fall three years ago and cracked a rib when I slipped on black ice near the coop and it's made me leary of walking on ice. Much much rather walk through snow.

As for the cold, I seldom complain about the summer heat, but the winter cold makes me grumpy.

Morning Sour, Ron and all the happy campers here at the home.

And another tiding of Happy New Years to all. Finally the holidays are over and we can get back to the nonsense called survival 2021.

I woke up to freezing rain hitting the bedroom windows. They are calling for it to transition over to snow at some point. I was able to get the damaged nets that were down loose from the ice and stuffed in my metal framed chicken tractor before round two hit. That left half of the run still covered. Not sure if the deer netting over the second half will survive today but once I can get through this weather and get a warming trend I can assess remove and replace.

We get a lot of ice here and I've found that the string woven nets hold up a lot better than the Deer X deer fencing although the Deer X brand holds up the best of any I've tried.
@microchick , so which one is best? I'm confused.

Happy New years to you and all the rest here as well!! My biggest problem with snow and ice is my chickens as well! Its not just the snow either, once it gets warm it melts so slow that everything gets so sloppy muddy for days on end- and if it doesn't melt slow it means we get lots of rain and is still sloppy muddy for a long time!
My snowflakes (as you put it 😊) want to stay inside the coop as well. I shoveled around their pen so it melts faster because the snow was so deep. The neighbor man yelled across the yard (sarcasm) to shovel the side walk. I'm trying to ignore him because he doesn't have anything nice to say and has no appreciation of my chickens which causes me anxiety because you never know when the neighbors could finally dream up a reason to go to the township to get rid of your chickens.

Luckily we do not have to contend with ice here! We do get some strong winds though

Yeah and frankly with what those strong winds do to you guys with the wild fires I think I'll stick with the ice. Although we have had trees destroyed by ice storms and annoy us with power outages, they seldom destroy homes, which is good.

I just got in from the coop. Door was frozen shut. We had enough ice that it has filled all the footprints from yesterday. I managed to get the door knob unlatched and gave it the old shoulder ram. Door popped open for me and I managed not to get dumped inside. Even the roosters thought it was funny.
