Yeah, I know but my back appreciates the 40 pound bags.re: Heavier bags
The heavier they are, the less expensive per pound. I can order Chewy chicken feed to my door and that saves the heavy lifting partially (I still need to get it from the front door to the coop...Where's my DH?) Pretty sure the delivery person cusses when Chewy has their BOGO (well, 3 for the price of 2) sales.
Feed does come in lesser sizes (15, 25, 40#) than 50, but my wallet feels it.
Funny that a 5 lb bag of oyster shell costs up to $7 at the store and comes in a handy resealable bag, and yet 50 lbs of the same is only a few dollars more clothed in paper.
Move chickens at night. Easier to catch that way.Based on everyone's experience here, when is the best time to move chickens around? I need to move Bruce and the two EE's out of the big pen into the hoop coop, and put the two ladies in the hoop coop in the big pen with the remaining 3 ladies. Those 5 are all very docile and should get along great. Bruce doesn't much like the 3 black hens, and they don't seem to like him either.
I know you get a ton more feed than I do, but like I said.. I keep spare bags or a 5 gallon bucket around to empty half of the food into, then move the 25# remaining into the house, and fill 'er back up from the other bag or bucket. Takes longer but my back appreciates it.Yeah, I know but my back appreciates the 40 pound bags.
Thanks Penny and Capricorn for the advice. I'm just a year into chickens and still learning a lot! I found Prince on top of Charlie and Henrietta's house and not in the hen house with his ladies. Guess he doesn't like being indoors much. I knew someone had been up there because of all the 'leftovers'. It's a wonder he and Charlie haven't fought more. Charlie has a habit of sticking his head through the gate between the two pens, and has gotten his pretty comb all pecked up. But I loves my Charlie, and when Charlette his daughter starts laying I'll be opening the gate between the two pens and allowing Charlie and Henrietta to move right on in with those 5 ladies. Henrietta is the biggest problem because she's bossy and the other 5 are super sweet and docile. We dump those bags in feeder we built from a road map we were given so there is couple of black PVC feeders like they cannot dig the food with their feet .. They have a ball scratching around them ..
I always do anything at night .. Never been one to mess with them more than needed..
