Goat owners... my neighbor wants to get a goat "eventually." (That is literally all I know about it!) What kind of space do they need?
It depends on if you want a "dry lot" (so no green growth... just a bare yard), or if you want them on pasture/range (so green growth, plants and such).

But first... where in the world? In dry country... 10 acres for one goat.... someplace with regular rain... maybe 2 acres.

But... if the fences aren't GREAT then that goat will be wherever it wants to be.

Grand Rapids area, Michigan. Regular rainfall. Some of their lot is a steep hill, so not very useful...? I don't think they have 2 acres of flat land...

Oh boy. What kind of fence would keep a goat in? If they get one, I don't think the area he pointed out as "we could put it here" is anywhere near big enough.

Maybe my question should be, how small a pen can a goat be in (square footage)? How high a fence does it take to contain a goat? Would an electric fence do the trick?

I like my neighbors, but can not have a goat wandering around our property, or worse yet, getting into my garden.

I have been taking some Tumeric. Just ran out of it.
Did I tell you I got a truck full of building materials to build a duplex grow out coop? And yesterday I got 23 bales of hay for the goats and bunnies. But I have days I just can't seem to do anything and so I sleep for a day or 2. Yes, I need a better doctor.
I know. It's hard. My mind has all these projects I need to do but my body is just groaning. About the time we lost Sid my allergies were acting up thanks to the trees blooming. I wound up with a sinus infection and at the same time I had a flare in both of my feet. I felt like everything was hitting me from all angles at once. Doctor gave me steroid shots, and antibiotics that make me sleep every afternoon but when I'm awake I'm feeling my energy levels coming back up slowly. Helps when you don't feel as though everything in your head is turning to liquid and trying to exit through your nose.

New shoe inserts that the doc wanted me to try for my feet arrived today. Need to give them a few days to see if they help. If they don't it's on to the physical therapist and special molded inserts for both feet.

In the mean time I need to fit a storm door to the north end of the coop before hot weather sets in. Shouldn't be a big job but the garden needs attention.

So yeah, I know where you are coming from.

Hope you can find time to take care of @CapricornFarm. She's a pretty special lady and we care about her here at the Home!

It does make sense to get the covid vaccine here then since it is free here.
Especially since they aren't getting the vaccines out real fast and as a foreign student she's below the bottom of the list for priority.

Mini Lamancha, Nigerian dwarf, Boer, even larger? Goats don't care if the land is flat but it will be harder for the land owner to fence.

My understanding is that if a goat can find a way out it will so they better put up a proper fence or you will find them in your yard.

I assume you are zoned for goats?

Especially the last part. Most folks here Amish and non Amish have goats all say the same thing. They are escape artists.

Amish farm near us has a goat dairy. At least once a summer I drive by and the goats are out. I have to stop by and tell one of his boys time to herd the escapees back into their pasture.

Can you elaborate on what a proper fence might be, please? Height, electric, barbed wire?

I don't know what they might be thinking, in terms of breed. She wants milk and to make cheese.

We're zoned agricultural, I think. Lots of farms nearby, so I don't think it'll be an issue.

The lay of the land is a steep hill down to a river. That's about half their lot, which I think is 2.5 ish acres. It would be a pain to fence down that hill, that's for sure. Can/do goats swim? Would it want to go into the river?

Gee, I'm hoping this is a long way off. Like never, maybe.
