90s here for most of the week. Not too happy about it but it's the weather and better than 10 degrees and a -25 wind chill so I ain't complainin,........too much.
Sooooooooo, I was standing in the kitchen cooking up some scrambled eggs for the kids when I got to thinking. Could be dangerous on my part but sometimes it's worthwhile.
Has any one ever thought about buying chicks for breeding at the local farm store or where ever and thought... 'I wonder if they are siblings'. Of course you don't want that. The next generation would be inferior. Inbreeding multiplies faults, while line breeding is supposed to add good traits (I learned that early on when I had a herd of horses). I have been cross breeding my hens with roos of other breeds and getting much larger, more well balanced offspring, even if they aren't 'purebreds'. That is definitely taking care of the bird size issue. I'm also working on egg size and color. My pretty EE boy is in with the Cinnamon queen and 3 Calico princesses. Hoping for biddies that will lay green eggs. If any of them are blue egg layers, well I'll decide then.
What say you?
