The Old Folks Home

Hi all. Haven't been around much. Crunch is on to get the wood done.

@bruceha2000, you would be impressed by my skill with my Ryobi lipo chain saw. I am no longer just a chain wench, I are a chain saw wench now also... :lau

Okay, give you all your laugh for the day.

Our local MFA (Missouri Farmers Association) where I buy feed is moving their locations sometime between now and the end of the year...part of the joke. But until then they are keeping a meager supply of feed on hand.

This morning, we come in from the timber, I get cleaned up and head to town for gas and feed.

MFA sells a pelleted hog food called Evolution that I feed to my free range roosters along with some cracked corn mixed it. It is low in protein and calcium and they frankly love it. I have plenty of layer pellets on hand so I thought Okay, I'll stock up on Evolution this month. If push comes to shove I can feed the hog pellets to the layers with scratch and oyster shell on the side.

So I order 3 bags of that along with two bags of scratch grain, one bag of cracked corn for the roos and one bag of all flock/game bird crumbles for the youngsters as I'm trying to wean them off of it.

No all flock. What would I like to sub? My mind is churning away at this point. I have one days worth of All Flock left. I can head to the Amish Feed Store up the road and get some ADM feed there. I tell them to give me another bag of cracked corn. Okay, they give me the bad news. 107$. I'm writing out the check and before I finish I look up and say: This seems high. You were supposed to comp me a bag of scratch this month because you messed up my order last month. But even so that seems high.

They start reading back the order and the price. Evolution, 23$ per 50.

WHOE! I say. That went up 10$ in one month? Is that right?

There are different types of Evolution. They look my last invoice up and say, you paid 13.50 a bag last month. The manager overheard and said, Wait, and told one of the dock guys to go out and check the bags of Evolution. He comes back. The main office sent them the wrong formula of it. He says, nope, don't sell her that she can't use that feed for what she wants to use it for. And while you are at it, send that pallet back. I'll never be able to sell that here.

The next question, what can we sub the Evolution for? I think. Got any layer pellets? It's a little early to start them but hey, better than starving.

Nope, no pellets. Then they tell me that there are only two customers who buy the pellets and I am one of them so they are not going to keep them in stock. By this time I have my head laying on the cabinet and tell them 'You guys are killing me! You just want me to go up to Sam's feed store for my feed, don't you?'

Well we don't know what to tell you they are just giving us the bare minimum here till we move and we don't know when we are going to move. We do have the layer crumbles.

I'm almost growing at this point . I explain that I don't feed crumbles because my hens waste them and then insult me by taking dirt baths in them.

We sell feeders I'm told. Now I am growling. I've got feeders! They dig the crumbles out with their beaks. I walk in and find them under the feeder taking a dirt bath in the crumbles. Look, you have cracked corn. Give me 100 pounds of cracked corn, 100 pounds of scratch grain and here's my check.

I did get my comped bag of scratch grained at least...

Told DH that I was over 30 minutes in the feed store and felt like I was trapped in an old Abbott and Costello skit, you know....who's on first?

Tomorrow I go to the Amish feed store...which is where I will go from now on.

I saw 50 lb bags of oats for $10. I should get some of those.
That's cheap, Cap. I would at that price. Mix it with the cracked corn for my free range roosters if nothing else.

Had a tick crawling on me today and for some strange reason wondered how you are doing?

Driving into town I heard a commercial talking about keeping kids safe from ticks. The tag line was Ticks Suck!

Yep, they sure do.

I am ok, got a tick on me today before i even went outside! They don't seem to like the heat and rain we have had lately!
I have been doing chores late at night, like 2 am to avoid the worst of the heat. I still sweat though.

Thank heaven and the stars. We do not as a given have high humidity.
Huh I was deserted today the guys went to the dump ..
BF and the Son both went .. I scraped my tables gave them frozen treats, had the blasted phone in my pocket the entire time.

They don't here either, @CapricornFarm.

The tick numbers have diminished appreciably. Wasn't unusual to find 5-10 on us a month ago after venturing in the woods now it's one or two.

What's bad is the cob webs here in mid to late summer. They manage to stretch across the trails at face height and you walk into them because you can't see them. I usually have a spider hanging from the brim of my visor every morning by the time we reach a work site. Now I take a pole with me or pick up a stick and hold it at arms length as a spider web version of a cow catcher.

It's been hot here too. Not quite as bad this week but still the sun is roasting heat when you stand out in it for too long.
