I've done a lot of that even on large areas. I used heavy mill black plastic put down in the fall and let it do its job for a while in the fall and then again come spring. It helped get seed up and growing faster in the warmer soil too. Now I'll use a large heavy duty tart that can be used over and over again.Getting rid of weeds is a chore!
Soil has a lot of dormant seeds that will sprout if the soil is disturbed.
